Bison Host Lafayette to Begin Patriot League Action

The Bucknell baseball team is back at Depew Field at Marren Park for the third straight weekend as the Bison open up Patriot League play against Lafayette.

Bucknell is coming off of a 14-4 loss in seven innings to No. 15 North Carolina. The Bison were tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth before the Tar Heels took a two-run lead and capped off the game with an eight-spot in the seventh.

Last weekend, the Bison went 1-2 against Saint Joseph's. The Bison pulled out a gutsy 15-13 win in game two to even the series, but the Hawks took game three 13-3.

Lafayette is coming off of a 16-11 loss to Le Moyne on Wednesday. The Leopards picked up their first win of the season over the weekend over No. 13 NC State.

Last Time Out vs. Saint Joseph's and at No. 15 UNC
- The Bison trailed North Carolina 5-3 heading to the seventh, where UNC scored eight runs to hit the mercy rule. Jake Schultz made his return to the mound for the first time in over a year, pitching the first inning of the game. Down 2-0 in the third, Ty Lagoni tied the game up with a two-run single. Zach Selfon later tied the game up 3-3 in the fifth with an RBI single.
- Bucknell was stifled at the plate in games one and three of the series against Saint Joseph's. Between the two games, the Bison combined for just six hits.
- In game two, the Bison held off a Hawks' comeback to win 15-13 in a four-hour long game. Bucknell led 13-4 heading to the seventh, but nine runs from the Hawks in the seventh and eighth made it a one-run game. The Bison grabbed an insurance run in the eighth, and Hadley Maxwell closed out the ninth for the win.
- It was a pitcher's duel in game one of the series. Jonathan Adelmann had his longest career outing in his new role as a starter. He tossed 7.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He surrendered just one walk and fanned five batters. Â
- In game two, Everett Garber tossed 5.1 innings to earn his second win of the year. He allowed four runs, three unearned, on eight hits. Garber struck out a career-high eight batters.
- In game three, the Bison were no-hit for 6.2 innings until Ty Lagoni ended it with a ground rule double.
- Bucknell is hitting .213 at the plate and pitchers have posted a 7.49 team ERA. Opponents are hitting .313 against the Bison and pitchers have a 3.98 ERA.
- Outfielder Michael Trommer is hitting .333/.433/.647 for a 1.080 OPS. He has four home runs and seven RBIs along with six multi-hit games. Against Saint Joe's, Trommer notched his 100th career hit with an RBI single in game two against saint Joseph's. He followed up the hit with a two-run homer in his next at-bat.
- Freshman DH and first baseman Garrett Mathias is hitting .313/.436/.469 to begin his collegiate career. He is 10-for-32 at the plate and is third on the team with six RBIs. Mathias has drawn seven walks.
- Outfielder Michael Chiaravallo is hitting .259 in eight starts. The junior has two home runs and six RBIs this season. Â
- Third baseman Zach Selfon is second on the team with 12 hits. The Northwestern transfer has five RBIs and five runs scored.
- Ty Lagoni has 11 hits and eight RBIs in 14 games. Billy Fluharty has 10 hits, four RBIs and eight runs scored. Fluhart is 3-for-4 on stolen base attempts this season. Â
- The Bison have hit 12 home run. Ty Lagoni, Andrew Swenson, Ryan Facinelli, Garrison Bullock, Lleyton Coupe and Mathias have all homered. Trommer, Chiaravallo and Mathias all homered in their first at-bats of the season. Bullock homered in his second at-bat of the year.
- Coupe was 2-for-2 against Saint Joseph's in game two with a pinch-hit home run. The homer was the first of his career. Coupe had two RBIs in that game and then drove in two runs on a single in game three. Â
- Jonathan Adelmann has a 3.15 ERA in four starts for the Bison in his new role for the Bison. The right-hander is coming off of his longest career outing where he went seven innings with one earned run on four hits. Adelmann has allowed 13 runs, only seven of which were earned in 20.0 innings. He's surrendered 13 walks and struck out 16 batters.
- Everett Garber has a 5.09 ERA in 17.2 innings over four starts. Garber is 2-1, getting the win in each of his last two starts.Â
- Freshman Brady Hoar has a 7.02 ERA in four starts. Saint Joseph's tagged him for seven runs on Sunday, but the Freshman posted a 3.95 ERA through the first three games. He earned the Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor after a quality start in Bucknell's lone win over Radford.
- Hadley Maxwell is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season for the Bison. He's allowed just two hits and struck out five batters over 4.1 innings and four appearances.
- Senior Ryan Facinelli was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team and was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2025.
- Bucknell posted an 18-27 overall record with a 10-15 mark in the Patriot League. The Bison finished fifth in the PL missed the playoffs after making the postseason the previous three seasons.
- Holy Cross won the 2025 Patriot League Championship, ending Army's three-year run as champions.
- Head coach Scott Heather is in his 14th season at the helm, and he is the third-longest tenured coach in program history. Heather's 242 career wins are second-most in team history, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Gene Depew (591).
- Coach Heather is assisted by Jason Neitz (16th season), Brett Smith '17 (6th season) and Josh Kieffer (5th season).
- Lafayette is 1-10 to begin the 2026 season. The Leopards picked up their first win of the season this past weekend in the series-opener against No. 13 NC State with an 11-6 victory.
- The Leopards have had a tough schedule to begin the year. They opened their season with a four-game series at Miami before taking on William & Mary. They then took on nationally ranked NC State, taking one game from the three-game series.
- Lafayette is batting .223 as a team and pitchers have posted a 13.34 team ERA. Opponents are hitting .351 and opposing pitchers have a 5.13 ERA.
- Teddy Cashman leads the team with a .296 batting average in 10 games. Liam ebbs is hitting .286/.405/.976 for a .976 OPS. Ebbs has 10 hits, five RBIs and two homers in nine games.
- Matt Colella and Alex Barist are both tied for the team-lead with 10 hits. Colella has eight RBIs and two home runs.
- Brandon Doubek is 9-for-22 at the plate in seven games. He has two home runs and six RBIs.
- Boden Fernsler leads the team with 11 RBIs. He has hit four home runs this season. Jack Mislan has seven RBIs for the Leopards.
- Lafayette have hit 18 home runs in 11 games.
- Tristan Helmick has a 5.00 ERA in three starts. He has tossed 18.0 innings, allowing 10 earned runs on 17 hits with nine strikeouts.
- Kellen Moore and Gregory Quintana have each made one start. Moore has a 7.88 ERA in eight innings and Quintana has a 10.00 ERA in nine innings.
- Trey Zaffiro and Trey Deitelbaum have made two starts each. Braden Pomponi, and Trace Florio have each made on start.
- Lafayette leads the all-time series with the Bison 127-91-1 dating back to 1895. Lafayette won the very first matchup with a 9-0 victory.
- Bucknell went 2-3 against the Leopards last season. Lafayette won both games of a doubleheader at Depew Field midway through the season before the met up in the final series of the year. The Bison won the first two games in Easton to give them a shot at the postseason, but Lafayette took the final game to knock out the Bison.
- Bucknell is back at home again on Tuesday as the Bison host Le Moyne for a single game at 3 p.m.
- The Bison continue Patriot League action next weekend with a three-game series at Navy. The Bison and Mids will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. before they conclude the series on Sunday.
