Bucknell (5-10, 1-0 PL) led 6-2 headed to the eighth before a two-run homer by Lafayette's (1-11, 0-1 PL) Jack Mislan made it a two-run ballgame. The Bison got the two runs back in the bottom of the eighth to restore the four-run lead. Brandon Doubek led off the ninth with another home run, but Tyler Seidman worked two strikeouts and a fly ball to close out the win.
Just a week after Adelmann pitched a career high seven innings with a personal-best eighth strikeouts, the junior right-hander struck out 10 batters in seven innings on the mound. The Leopards had timely hitting as they plated two runs off of three hits on Adelmann.
Lagoni was hot at the plate with a 4-for-5 day with two RBIs. Lagoni opened the scoring in the first inning, and the junior transfer's RBI triple added insurance for the Bison in the seventh.
Michael Trommer was 3-for-5 at the plate with two singles and a double. Garret Mathias and John Calabrese each had two hits, and Calabrese drove in two runs.
On top of Bucknell's 14 hits, the Bison drew four walks and three hit batters but stranded 10 runners in the game. Lafayette scored five runs on five hits, and Bison pitchers surrendered just two walks. Both teams made one error apiece in the game.
The Bison jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings, scoring two runs in both the first and third innings. Billy Fluharty was hit with a pitch to lead off the game, and Trommer followed with a single in the next at bat. Lagoni took a pitch right back up the middle and the speedy Fluharty came in to score. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Zach Selfon drove in a run with a groundball up the middle. The Bison re-loaded the bases again but stranded all three runners in the inning.
Mathias and Selfon both singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning, and a diving play on a groundball by Alex Barrist to get the force out at second prevented the Bison from loaded the bases. The play ultimately saved a run as Calabrese brought both runs home with a double to right-centerfield. The Bison put runners on first and third, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning.
The Leopards got their first hit of the game off of Adelmann in the fourth inning. Adelmann had struck out five batters between the second and third innings. With runners on first and second, Adelmann worked a fly ball and his seventh strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Bucknell added another run in a flash in the fifth to make it 5-0. Lafayette got two quick outs, but Calabrese and Andrew Swenson each hit a two-out double to extend the lead.
Lafayette got on the board in the sixth inning. Barrist singled and stole second to get a runner in scoring position with no outs. He moved to third on a groundball and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Colella.
In the seventh, Lafayette put runners on second and third with one out. A groundout to Lagoni brought the run home to make it 5-2, and Adelmann ended his day with a pop out. The Bison made it 6-2 with a run in the seventh without a hit. Mathias walked, and Selfon and Swenson were hit by pitchers to load the bases with two outs. Deacon Bowne drew another walk to bring the run home, but the Bison stranded all three runners.
Tyler Seidman earned a quick out in the eighth before an error put a runner on base. The freshman forced another fly out before Mislan hit a massive 488-foot home run to make it 6-4. Seidman struck out a batter to end the inning.
The Bison got both runs back in the eighth to make it a four-run game again. Trommer doubled for his third hit of the day, and Lagoni brought him home with a triple into the right-centerfield gap. Lagoni then came home to score on an error in the next at bat.
Doubek led off the ninth with a home to make it a three-run ballgame, but Seidman buckled down to strike out two batters quickly. Calabrese then tracked down another big fly ball to the warning track to end the game.
Bucknell and Lafayette continue the series at Depew Field at Marren Park for game two on Saturday at 1 p.m.
