PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team defeated Villanova 10-5 for its third win in four games and its first nonconference road win since a 7-5 win over North Carolina A&T on March 3, 2018.
Bucknell improves to 7-18 with the win.
The Bison shot out to a 7-0 lead behind solid pitching early on from Nicholas Sadd, who earned his first career win. The Bison have now scored ten runs or more four times this season.
Sadd was well in control early on in the game, striking out three batters in the first inning and one more in the second as Bucknell raced out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second frame.
JohnPaul Bell started the proceedings with a lead-off walk before Evan Madigan moved Bell to third on a double to right field. Peter Marren then reached after being hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. A failed pickoff attempt then allowed both Madigan and Bell to score on the next play. After a single by Caleb Broughton moved Marren to third, a passed ball by the Wildcats allowed Marren to score the Bison's third run.
Bucknell kept things rolling in the third, scoring four more runs in the inning. Luke Hartman and Bell each notched singles to put runners on first and second with one out, before Evan Madigan brought both home on a double to center field. A fielding error on Villanova allowed Marren to reach and Madigan to score all the way from second for the third run of the inning. Broughton was involved in Bucknell's fourth run of the frame after he singled home Marren, who moved to third beforehand on a walk and a steal.
Villanova pulled a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly for just Sadd's second earned run of the season at that point in 19.1 innings pitched.
The Wildcats scored three more runs in the sixth on five hits to pull within 7-4 after six.
The Bison provided some insurance runs in the eighth when Evan Madigan and Ben Smith executed a double steal of home and second, respectively. Smith then went on to score from a wild pitch after moving to third on another single by Broughton. Jack Schuler then singled to shortstop to score Broughton from second.
Matt Shobe replaced Sadd in the seventh, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Villanova made one final push in the bottom of the ninth, leading off the inning with back-to-back singles off of reliever Andrew Funovits, who replaced Shobe in the ninth.
Schuler helped settle things down during the next at-bat after he managed to double off a Villanova base runner at second while catching a line out in left field.
After a double and a single scored a run for the Wildcats, Funovits forced a foul out down the right field line that gave Bucknell the final out and the win.
Broughton finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Evan Madigan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hartman and Schuler also collected two hits on the day. Sadd earned his first career win on the mound after going six innings while allowing four earned and striking out five.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League action on Saturday and Sunday with three games against Army at home.
