LEWISBURG, Pa. --Â The Bucknell University baseball team fell in two games to Army, 4-3 and 16-9 in a doubleheader at Depew Field on Saturday afternoon.Â
Bucknell falls to 7-20 this season and 2-8 in the Patriot League
Â
Game One: Army 4, Bucknell 3.Â
The Bison scored three runs in the seventh inning in a comeback attempt, but left the tying run on third and a potential winning run on second as the rally fell just short.Â
Army scored its opening run in the top of the first on a sac fly to left field that scored Jacob Hurtubise from third. Hurtubise originally singled before advancing to second on a bad hop in the outfield that allowed him to advance another base.Â
The Black Knights threatened again in the top of the second, after loading the bases with two outs, but starting pitcher Nate Grisius struck out Army's Josh White looking to keep the deficit at one.Â
Army added a run in the top of the fourth after Trey Martin launched a homer over the left field fence to give the Black Knights a 2-0 advantage. The Black Knights then doubled their lead on a two-RBI single from Blake Ledoux.Â
The Bison, who had two hits through the first six innings, managed to bring the bats to life in the bottom of the seventh inning when Dominic Toso ripped a double to left center on the first pitch he saw. JohnPaul Bell quickly brought Toso home on a stinging double down the left field line. Â
Alex Baumann kept the rally going with a single up the middle that scored Bell from second and brought the Bison to within two runs with nobody out.Â
Pinch hitter Miles Moore then made solid contact on a single that put runners on first and second, before Caleb Broughton tallied the Bison's third run on a single that moved pinch runner Brendan Lowery to third and scored Baumann.Â
The Bison had the tying run on third and the winning run on second, but couldn't find another run in the inning as Army held on for a 4-3 win.Â
Seven different Bison players registered a hit, with Broughton, Bell, and Baumann each notching an RBI.Â
Â
Game Two: Army 16, Bucknell 9
The Black Knights pulled away with three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh inning after Bucknell had pulled within two on a two-run home run by JohnPaul Bell in the fifth, 9-7.Â
Army jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three straight hits and a walk to open the game.Â
The Bison roared back in the bottom of the second with four unanswered runs, all with two outs. Evan Madigan began the inning with a single to third base, before Ben Smith walked to put two runners on. Luke Hartman singled to right field to bring home Madigan, before Tyler Wincig stepped up and blasted a home run over the center field fence to give Bucknell a 4-3 lead after two.Â
Army quickly regained the lead, 5-4, in the third on a two-RBI triple by Trey Martin before adding two more runs on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt on an attempt to get the runner out at third.
Army extended its lead to 9-4 in the top of the fifth on two wild pitches.Â
The Bison stormed back once again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth after Wincig led off the inning with his second homer of the day to left field. Dominic Toso singled in the next at-bat, before Bell added to the home run list with a blast to right center to cut the Army lead to 9-7. A walk by Baumann, single by Madigan, and a single by Jared Drizin then loaded the bases with no outs, but the Black Knights managed a 5-2-3 double play to get a force out at home and a ground out to escape the inning.Â
The Bison had one more good chance to get back in the game with the bases loaded down 12-8 in the seventh, but Army once again managed to escape the situation on a strikeout as it went on to take the game, 16-9. Drizin's first career home run closed out the scoring in the ninth.Â
Wincig's two home runs were the first multi-home run game by a Bison player since Danny Rafferty accomplished the feat on April 24, 2016 against Holy Cross. Rafferty was in attendance to see Wincig's two-homer day, as he and 24 of his teammates from the 2014 Patriot League championship team were recognized prior to game one of the doubleheader.Â
Drizin finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Wincig was 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs overall.Â
The Bison will conclude its three-game series against Army on Sunday with a single game beginning at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Patriot League Network.     Â
