LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team bounced back after a game one loss to win both games of a doubleheader and take the series from Merrimack on Saturday at Depew Field at Marren Park.
Bucknell (3-7) got behind a quality start by Everett Garber and two-run homer by Michael Trommer in the fifth to take the first game 3-2. John Calabrese then drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to walk off the second game.
Just a day after the Bison fell 24-2 and made seven errors in game one, the Bison rattled off two wins with solid pitching with no errors in the doubleheader. The Bison trailed midway through both games, but rallied to pull off two come-from-behind wins.
Trommer's bat continued to stay hot as the senior was 3-for-5 at the plate with three walks and two RBIs between the two games. His third homer of the season came at the right time as the two-run shot gave the Bison a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning of game one. Trommer is batting .389 through 10 games and has seven extra-base hits.
Garber had his longest outing of the year and got his first career win in game one. The Warriors had seven hits and three walks, but Garber stranded six runners as the Bison mounted the comeback.
Billy Fluharty was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI in the two games. He hit a triple in the first game and doubled in the second game. Garrison Bullock was 2-for-5 in game two with a double and a triple. Â
Freshman Brady Hoar had another good outing for the Bison. The right-hander went five innings in the second game and allowed just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out four batters. Calabrese was 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI in the ninth in the game. Â
Game One: Bucknell 3, Merrimack 2 (7 innings)
Merrimack (2-5) opened the scoring in the third inning on a two-out double by Joey Frammartino who was 3-for-4 in the game.
The Bison answered quickly with a run in the bottom half of the frame to tie it up 1-1. Fluharty tripled to lead off the inning and Zach Selfon showed a nice piece of hitting with a groundball to the right side to bring in the run.
The Warriors took the lead right back in the fourth on a two-out double by Garret McGovern. The Bison threatened to tie the game back up, loading the bases with one out. Fluharty hit a hard ground ball, but Merrimack was playing in and got the force out at home. The Bison then stranded all three runners.
Trommer's homer came in the bottom of the fifth inning. The left-handed hitter went opposite field for a 386-foot homer.
The Warriors got a runner in scoring position with one out in the sixth. Garber forced an infield pop-up and then struck out a batter to end his day. Hadley Maxwell picked up his second save of the season with a solid seventh inning. He allowed a two-out hit, but struck out two batters in the frame to close out the win.
Game Two: Bucknell 6, Merrimack 5
The Bison were stifled at the plate through the first five innings of game two as the Warriors built a 3-0 lead. Bucknell's bats came alive in the sixth inning as they plated five runs to flip the script.
Hoar got through three scoreless innings before Merrimack took the lead in the fourth. He allowed just two hits in the game before Greg Cristino hit a solo home run to left field. Hoar got into trouble in the fifth as all three of his walks in the game came in the inning to load the bases. He worked a fly ball to center to strand all three runners and end his day.
Merrimack rallied for two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. A leadoff double and a walk put runners to first and third and a groundout brought the run home. Brooks Craigue hit an RBI single late in the inning to score another before Mikey Myro struck out two batters to stop the damage.
Trommer's fourth double of the season came with one out in the sixth to put a runner in scoring position. Garrett Mathias singled back up the middle in the next at-bat to get the Bison on the board. Bullock continued the rally with his triple to make it a 3-2 game.
With Bullock on third, Ryan Facinelli hit a hard ground ball to the right side. The first baseman made a great play, but the throw to home was not in time and got away to move Facinelli to second. The senior moved to third on a wild pitch, and then beat the throw home on another groundball hit by Andrew Swenson to take the lead. Calabrese singled and Selfon walked, leading to a sacrifice fly by Fluharty to make it 5-3.
Myro and Tyler Hawkins got through a scoreless seventh and eighth to hold the lead, but MErrimack rallied in the ninth to tie the game 5-5. The Warriors loaded the bases with one out, and Liam Jones worked a strikeout for the second out. Cristino came up with a clutch two-out single to score two runs.
Trommer walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Merrimack struck out two Bison hitters, but Ryan Facinelli drew a walk and Swenson was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Calabrese came up, and with a full count, saw a pitch in the dirt to bring in the winning run.
Bucknell is back at Depew Field at Marren Park on Saturday to host Saint Joseph's. The Bison then travel to Philadelphia to play Saint Joseph's on the road for a single game on Sunday.
