LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team dropped its series-opener against Saint Joseph's 2-0 in a pitchers' duel on Friday afternoon at Depew Field at Marren Park.
Bucknell (3-8) and Saint Joseph's (4-7) combined for 10 hits in the game with the Bison only getting three. The Hawks' pitching staff combined to strike out 15 batters. Â
Jonathan Adelmann had the longest outing of his career in his fourth start of the season. Adelmann allowed one run on four hits and struck out five batters over seven innings.
Saint Joseph's Duke McCarron pitched five scoreless innings for his first win of the year, allowing just two hits while striking out seven batters. Christian Coppola pitched three innings in relief, striking out six of the nine batters he faced. Andrew Gaines struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Hawks grabbed the lead in the fourth inning on an infield single. Blake Primrose hit a one-out triple as Billy Fluharty's diving effort in centerfield fell just short. Joey Pagano then brought him home on a ground ball to first base.
Saint Joe's added an insurance run late in the eighth inning after a two-out rally. Mikey Myro retired the first two batters of the inning but a single by Joey Gale and a triple by Alex Kelsey made it a 2-0 ballgame. Myro went on to strand two runners to end the rally.
The Bison could not manage a late rally, going six-up, six-down in the eighth and ninth to end the game.
Bucknell and Saint Joseph's are back in action for game two of the series at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Depew Field at Marren Park.
