Bucknell led 13-4 after six innings, but Saint Joseph's scored four in the seventh and five in the eighth to cut the Bison lead to just one run. The Bison grabbed an insurance run in the eighth, and Hadley Maxwell shut it down in the ninth for his third save of the year.
Michael Trommer was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. The senior notched his 100th career hit on an RBI single in the third, then smashed his fourth homer of the season in the sixth.
Billy Fluharty, Luke Nascimento, Garrett Mathias and Lleyton Coupe all had a multi-hit game for the Bison. Coupe was 2-for-2 with two RBIs off the bench for the Bison, including his first career home run in a pinch hit at bat. Fluharty, Nascimento and Ty Lagoni all had two RBIs for the Bison.
Everett Garber gave the Bison 5.1 innings on the mound with a career-high eight strikeouts. Garber allowed four runs, three unearned, on eight hits. Bison pitchers combined to strike out 15 batters in the game.
Hadley Maxwell earned his third save of the season and is perfect in save opportunities to start the year. He has yet to allow a run while on the mound this season in 4.1 innings.
The Bison got its offense going right off the bat as Fluharty and Trommer were both hit with a pitch to put two runners on. Lagoni roped a triple down the right field line to drive in the first two runs of the game. Lagoni then came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Saint Joseph's led off the second with a double and a walk, and a one-out single loaded the bases. Garber worked his way out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly ball to end the inning.
The Hawks brought it back to 3-2 in the third before the Bison exploded for seven runs in the bottom half. Michael Chiaravallo went the other way for a double to lead off the inning, and Mathias and Zach Selfon drew free bases to load the bags.
Nascimento hit a one-out single to drive in two runs. After a walk by Andrew Swenson to reload the bases, Fluharty drove in to more with a single to center field to make it a 7-3 game. Trommer had a hard-hit single through the left side to drive in to bring in Swenson and Fluharty came in to score on a wild pitch. Chiaravallo drew a walk to reload the bases, and Mathias took his second walk of the inning to bring in the run to make it 10-2.
Saint Joseph's had a runner on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Garber forced two groundballs for a double play to end both innings. The Hawks chased Garber in the fifth with two more runs. A walk and a double put two runners in scoring position, and Richard Beggy drove in both runs with a double.
Coupe led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his first career home run. Trommer later followed with his two-run homer with two outs to extend the Bison lead to 13-4.
Saint Joe's made it a one-run ballgame with four runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth. The Hawks scored four runs on five hits in the seventh with a two-run double by Blake Primrose and a two-run single by Beggy.
The Hawks scored five unearned runs in the eighth to cut the Bison lead to 14-13. With two runners on and two out, Tyler Hawkins looked to have forced a groundball to end the inning, but an error kept the rally alive and brought in a run. An RBI single by Beggy brought in another, and a three-run homer by Alex Venezia made it a one-run game.
Fluharty reached base on an error with one out in the eighth, and Trommer and Lagoni drew free bases to load the bags. Selfon drew a two-out walk to bring home an insurance run to extend the lead 15-13.
The Hawks got two baserunners in the top of the ninth with two outs. Joey Pagano hit a deep fly ball off of Maxwell, but Chris Morabito chase it down at the warning track to end the ballgame.
Saint Joseph's had 17 hits in the game as the Bison had just 13 hits. The Bison had four errors in the game and the Hawks made just one error.
All 17 of Saint Joe's hits came from just six players. Beggy led the team with four hits and five RBIs. Alex Kelsey, Primrose and Venezia all had three hits. Pagano and Jason Janesko each had two hits.
Bucknell and Saint Joseph's will both head to Philadelphia for a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Smithson Field. Â
