LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team scored its third shutout in program history, blanking Howard, 23-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field.
Fourteen different Bison found the back of the net, including four first-time goal scorers. Bucknell limited Howard to just four shots on net, two in each half, and forced 20 turnovers in total.
The Bison's previous shutouts came in 1978 (6-0 over Bloomsburg) and 2002 (15-0 over Saint Francis (Pa.)). With one more goal they would have matched their school record in margin of victory, set in the 2016 opener with a 25-1 win over Delaware State.
Tace Sutherland (3g-1a) and Sarah Monteleone (3g-1a) paced Bucknell in both goals and points. Monteleone was one of the first-time goal scorers, joined by Julia Bradbury (2), Laurel McHale and Jamisen DeWitt. DeWitt started the game in net, earning the victory, before taking the field as an attacker late in the second half; Bucknell's four-year starting goalie gave her team a 20-0 lead by threading the ball just inside the left post.
Twelve different Bison had multi-point outings, with Kate Fiore (2g-1a), Eve Calabria (1g-2a) and Tegan Warren (1g-2a) registering three apiece. Bucknell led, 15-0, at halftime and got the game clock running permanently at the first half's 17:26 mark.
All three Bison goalies saw time in the cage, with freshman Caitlin Tucker making two saves in her collegiate debut. Jessie Britton, Callie DeWitt and Morgan Steinhacker each caused two turnovers, with DeWitt and Steinhacker among five Bison who scooped up two ground balls. Bradbury paced Bucknell with four draw controls.
Bucknell held advantages in shots (31-9), shots on goal (24-4), ground balls (19-8) and draw controls (13-12). The Bison also went 14 for 15 on their clears.
This game was the seventh battle between the Bucknell and Howard Bison. Bucknell now leads the series, 7-0, outscoring Howard by a combined margin of 149-45. Bucknell has netted at least 20 goals against Howard in each of their past six meetings.
Bucknell (1-3) returns to Graham Field on Saturday, hosting Robert Morris at 3 p.m.
