George Haines was one of Bucknell's finest basketball players. Selected to the Associated Press All-Pennsylvania Team in 1942, he was the leading scorer and outstanding player in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate League that year and was elected captain of the 1942-43 Bucknell team. Haines, who graduated in January 1943 with a degree in chemical engineering, set a school record with 324 points in 19 games in 1941-42 and had a single-game high of 37 points against Lebanon Valley, which remains as one of the highest single-game totals in school history. President of his senior class and a Dean's List student, Haines made 203 of 275 foul shots in his career, and Bison coach Mal Musser said, "George Haines is one of the finest, if not the finest, basketball players I have every coached. He is also a good team player and a fine competitor. When Haines, who later received a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, was selected for the All-State team, Musser noted that, "of more significance is the credit which George Haines brings to Bucknell by being an exemplary type of student who truly represents the `Bucknell way of life.'"
