A co-captain and defensive tackle on the undefeated 1951 football team, George Young was named to the All-Pennsylvania, All-East and Little All-America first team. He went on to become a well-known executive in the National Football League, where he won two Super Bowl rings as general manager of the New York Giants. He led Bison to a 9-0 record in 1951, making that the last undefeated Bucknell football team. His coach, Harry Lawrence, said, "There aren't any better tackles than Young in college football." Young played in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game and then for one season with the Dallas Texans. A teacher and coach in the Baltimore school system for 15 years, Young coached football teams at Calvert Hall and City College High School to six Maryland state titles. He broke into the NFL front office ranks with the Baltimore Colts in 1968. He held several positions within that organization before moving to the Miami Dolphins as director of personnel and pro scouting in 1974. Young was named GM of the Giants in 1979, helping it to Super Bowl titles following the 1986 and 1990 seasons. The winner of the NFL's Executive of the Year Award an unprecedented five times, he was named Senior Vice President of Football Operations for the NFL in 1998, a post he held until his passing in 2001. In 1979 he was honored by the Bucknell Alumni Association for "Outstanding Achievement in a Chosen Profession."
