Baseball Extends Streak to 10, Sweeps Season Series from Lafayette with 13-7 Win

Bucknell's 10-game winning streak is currently the second-longest in the nation behind UCLA's school-record 23-game run. Nebraska has also won 10 in a row. The Bison are now two away from their own school record of 12 straight wins, set by the 1969 team that won the Middle Atlantic Conference championships. Bucknell also won 10 straight between the 1914 and 1915 seasons.
In the makeup of Sunday's rainout, Bucknell took the lead for good with a four-run third inning, although it never felt completely comfortable as the two teams traded blows throughout the late innings on the way to a second straight high-scoring game. Bucknell won 10-8 in 10 innings in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader after winning the opener 3-1. Lafayette entered the series on a five-game winning streak.
Bucknell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to an RBI single from Lleyton Coupe and a couple of productive outs. With runners at second and third and no outs, John Calabrese moved both runners with a ground ball to the right side, and then Andrew Swenson followed with a sacrifice fly.
Lafayette got the three runs right back in the bottom of the frame. Brandon Doubek led off the inning with the first of his two home runs on the day, and later Jack Mislan drove in a run with a double and Charlie Chropuvka tied it with an RBI ground out.
Billy Fluharty led off the second with a double and scored one batter later on Trommer's base hit. After an error, Mathias yanked his fifth home run of the season over the wall in right field to make it 7-3.
Bison starter Brady Hoar (4-2) hung three straight zeroes after the three-run second and got through five innings to earn his fourth win of the season. He struck out three and walked only one. Bryce Mitchell and Hadley Maxwell worked two innings apiece to finish it out.
Bucknell made it 8-3 on Trommer's long home run to right field leading off the sixth. After Mathias tied him earlier in the game, Trommer took back sole possession of the team home run lead with his sixth of the season. Lafayette scored twice in the sixth on Doubek's second solo homer and Chropuvka's two-out RBI single, but Mitchell got dangerous leadoff hitter Liam Ebbs on a soft ground ball to first to strand a runner in scoring position.
Bucknell turned to its running game for insurance markers in the seventh and eighth. Michael Chiaravallo doubled with one out and Andrew Swenson followed with a single. The duo pulled off a double steal, and Chiaravallo scored when the throw to second went into center field. With the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, Coupe hustled to beat out a potential inning-ending double play ball to earn himself an RBI, and then pinch-runner Danny Nawrocki scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-6. Ryan Ulisse's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth brought the Leopards within 11-7 before Maxwell got two straight called third strikes to strand two runners.
Bucknell added two more insurance runs in the ninth. Swenson and Deacon Bowne walked to start the inning, and then Fluharty beat out a bunt single with a run scoring on a wild throw to first. Trommer drove in his third run of the day with a sac fly to make it 13-7, and Maxwell shut the door with a scoreless ninth.
Fluharty, Trommer, and Zach Selfon all collected two hits, and 8-9 hitters Swenson and Bowne combined to draw five walks. Selfon made the defensive play of the day in the fourth inning, diving behind the bag at third to snag a sharp ground ball and then scrambling to his feet for a strong throw to first to retire Boden Fernsler.

Bucknell collected nine hits and nine walks on the way to its second-highest run total of the season. Lafayette recorded 11 hits – three from Doubek – but made four errors.
At 11-1 in the Patriot League, Bucknell has a three-game lead over defending-champion Holy Cross, which finished off a dominant three-game sweep of Army on Monday. The Crusaders won by scores of 11-5, 16-6, and 10-2. Bucknell host Mount St. Mary's in a non-league game on Wednesday, and then Holy Cross comes to Depew Field for a four-game set starting Friday afternoon.
