ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On a day when five of the six singles matches extended to three sets, the Bucknell men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Navy on Saturday at the USNA Tennis Courts. Amar Tahirovic and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega accounted for Bucknell's points with singles victories.
The Bison played without injured No. 3 man Liam Kilmer, and then Brendan McDonald had to retire in the third set against Tommy Kim at No. 4. That gave the Midshipmen an early second point after they won the doubles point, and Navy went on to clinch it on Aniketh Ayinala's three-set win over Adam Stavrakas at No. 2 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Tahirovic made quick work of Herrick Legaspi, 6-0, 6-1. Bain came back after dropping the first set against Charlie Spencer, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. The Midshipmen also got three-set wins from Jake Young at No. 5 and Steve Nguyen at No. 6. Both rallied after losing their first sets to Will Robinson and Nelson Alapi.
The Bison shook up their doubles pairings in this one. Tahirovic and Stavrakas teamed up for the first time this season and picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2, but Navy prevailed in the other two doubles matches to secure the point.
Now 11-10 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League, Bucknell has one final regular-season match next Saturday at Lehigh.
