Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison wrap up the regular season on Saturday against a hot Lehigh team that has won six of its last seven matches. Bucknell will then head right back to Bethlehem next week for the Patriot League Tournament.
- Bucknell is 2-2 in Patriot League play, with the losses coming to Army and Navy and the wins against Loyola and Colgate. Lehigh is 5-1, with the loss coming to Army. There is a not a true regular-season round robin in Patriot League tennis, so the tournament seeding will be determined by the league office next week. Army (5-0) and Navy (5-1) also meet this weekend, so there is still plenty to be worked out.
- Bucknell is coming off a 5-2 loss at Navy last week. With the exception of Amar Tahirovic's 6-0, 6-1 win over Herrick Legaspi at No. 1, all of the singles matches went to three sets. The Bison were already shorthanded with No. 3 man Liam Kilmer out with an injury, and then No. 4 Brendan McDonald had to retire in the third set, giving Navy a critical point in a close match.
- Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega was Bucknell's other winner at Navy, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 over Charlie Spencer at No. 3.
- Head coach Jason Cohen shook up the doubles lineup last week, with Tahirovic teaming with Adam Stavrakas for the first time this season. The duo won 6-3 at No. 2, but the Midshipmen took the other two doubles matches.
- With his two wins at Navy, Tahirovic became the first Bison ever to record 200 combined singles/doubles wins.
- This will be the final regular-season match for the record-setting senior class of Bain, McDonald, Stavrakas, and Tahirovic. This group has become the winningest class in program history. The March 29 win over Villanova was the 60th dual win over the last four years, surpassing the previous mark of 59 set by John Scarborough, who was the lone senior in the Class of 1998.

- Bucknell has won five Patriot League Player of the Week awards this spring, with Tahirovic winning three and Stavrakas and Liam Kilmer one each. Tahirovic has claimed the honor a record nine times in his career, while Stavrakas has earned five career citations.
- Tahirovic continues to lead the Bison with a 27-7 singles record and a 22-6 mark in doubles. Tahirovic has broken Nick Bybel's school record for combined career wins, and he is two away from Bybel's record of 112 singles wins.
- Kilmer is 18-9 in singles this season.
- McDonald also has 22 doubles wins against only seven losses. Earlier this spring, McDonald became Bucknell's all-time leader in doubles wins. He is 95-36 in his career. Ryan Sandburg '09 held the previous record with 87 doubles wins.
- Tahirovic and McDonald came one win away from an NCAA doubles bid with a big run at the ITA Conference Masters in San Diego. They won the Patriot League qualifier and then beat pairs from Boise State, UC Santa Barbara and Presbyterian to reach the semifinals. McDonald was honored with the ITA Sportsmanship Award at that event.
- Tahirovic also represented the Patriot League in singles at the ITA Conference Masters, where he beat reigning Big East Player of the Year Alejandro Gandini of DePaul in the first round before falling to Martin Birisiouk of N.C. State in three sets in the round of 16. Earlier in the fall, he played in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., where he dropped tight matches to opponents from TCU and Baylor, and he won twice in the main draw at the ITA Northeast Regional at Princeton.
- Lehigh has played some very good tennis this spring, highlighted by a 4-3 home win over Navy on March 28 that ignited its current 6-1 run.
- The Mountain Hawks dropped a 4-0 decision at Army last Friday but bounced back the next day to defeat Boston University 4-0 at West Point.
- Most recently, Lehigh swept rival Lafayette 4-0 on Tuesday in Bethlehem.
- Alex Van Lumich has been Lehigh's top player this spring with a 14-2 singles record, including a 4-1 mark at No. 1 and 9-1 at No. 2. Van Lumich is a transfer from Purdue Northwest, where he was nationally ranked in both singles and doubles in Division II.
- Henry Stoller is 9-2, playing primarily in the No. 6 spot. Sean Jaeger, a Second team All-Patriot League selection last season, typically plays No. 1 or 2 singles and is 6-7 on the spring.
- Jaeger and Van Lumich are 11-5 at No. 1 doubles, and Stoller and Wyeth Anzilotti are 7-2 at No. 2 doubles.
- Lehigh is coached by former Bucknell head coach Craig Schwartz (2014-16).
- Bucknell is 45-46 all-time against Lehigh in a head-to-head series that dates back to 1921.
- The Bison have won four in a row, including two 4-0 sweeps last season. Bucknell downed Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. The Bison claimed the doubles point and had won three opening sets in singles when a brief downpour resulted in a two-hour weather delay. Brendan McDonald later provided the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jackson Morash at No. 5 singles.
- Lehigh's last series win was a 4-3 verdict in 2023, but the Bison came back six days later and beat the Mountain Hawks 4-2 in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals at Colgate.
- There was only one Bucknell-Lehigh matchup in fall tournament play. McDonald and Amar Tahirovic beat Jaeger and Kosei Ogata 8-4 in the semifinals of the Patriot League qualifier for the ITA Conference Masters. The Bison duo went on to win the title.
- Lehigh will also host the Patriot League Tournament Apr. 23-26. Bucknell will begin tournament play in the quarterfinal round on Friday, Apr. 24 against an opponent to be determined.
