Huber’s Overtime Strike Sends Men’s Lax to Come-from-Behind 14-13 Win over Lafayette

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Hans Huber's extra-man goal with one-tenth of a second remaining in overtime lifted the Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a wild 14-13 win over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison overcame a five-goal second-half deficit while improving to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League.
The game saw a little bit of everything, from a goalie goal to matching five-goal runs to a critical overtime penalty when Lafayette (5-5, 1-3 PL) tried to call a timeout that it didn't have. In the end, it was an important victory for the Bison, who remain just a half-game behind Loyola and Boston University for the Patriot League lead heading into a home clash with Army next week.
Michael Meyer recorded three goals and assisted on Huber's overtime winner, and Peter Grandolfo also had a four-point day with two goals and two assists. Defenseman Caleb Lewis led all players with a career-high eight ground balls, and Jack Tully nabbed six GBs, including a couple of big ones on the faceoff wing late in the game.
Goalie Jaz Zanelli also had a big day, scoring his first career goal to beat the 10-man ride and tie the game at 5-5 heading into the halftime break, and then making several big saves at key junctures in the second half. Zanelli finished with 10 saves, none bigger than his robbery of Nick Muller in the overtime period.
Bucknell has struggled in the early part of third quarters this season, and the trend continued as Lafayette scored the first five coming out of the locker room. Nicholas Blalock's tally with one second left on the shot clock made it a 10-5 game with 4:52 left in the third quarter. The Leopards had been getting the better of the faceoffs to that point, but the Bison flipped the script in that area, winning seven in a row to help get back in the game.
Luke Brunner ended Bucknell's long scoring drought with back-to-back goals late in the third period, and then Grandolfo rolled to the front of the crease and scored with 12 seconds left to make it 10-8 after three. Huber picked out the top left corner at the 11:14 mark of the fourth, and then Meyer scored on the run to tie the game at 10-10 just 42 seconds later.
The Bison had a chance to take the lead but turned it over, and Aidan Kopen cashed in on a shot that Zanelli got a body on but trickled across the goal line. Benjamin DiBattista followed with his fifth goal of the game to restore Lafayette's two-goal lead with 6:31 to go.
Sean Berrigan got one back with a diving attempt late in the shot clock, but after Huber's potential tying shot rocked the left post, Blalock made it 13-11 with 3:19 to go.
Bucknell fought back once again, as Colin McLoy cleanly won the faceoff, Brunner nabbed a big ground ball to save the possession and then fed Grandolfo on the left side for a goal that made it 13-12 with 1:29 to go. McLoy won another draw, and Will Hopkins beat hobbled goalie Joe Doherty with a low shot to tie the game at 13-all with 25 seconds remaining.
The Bison nearly won it on a frenetic exchange in the dying seconds. Tully picked up the ground ball on the faceoff but had the ball checked loose by Andrew Matarese. Lafayette tried a long outlet that was picked off at midfield by John Young, who fired it back the other way to Owen Kovacs, but Doherty made a game-saving stop right before the horn.
Tully nabbed another ground ball on the overtime faceoff, but Doherty robbed Meyer for his 13th save of the day. Lafayette cleared, and then Zanelli stoned Muller to extend the game. After Grandolfo shot wide with 31 seconds left, the Leopards called timeout, but they had already used one on their offensive possession earlier in overtime.
That gave the Bison a man-up chance, and they cashed in when Huber skipped a low shot through Doherty's legs in the final fraction of a second. Huber scored Bucknell's first overtime goal since Sean O'Brien beat No. 3 Yale on Apr. 4, 2018.
Bucknell outshot Lafayette 54-33 and led 44-30 in ground balls. The Bison won 19 of the 31 faceoffs, including 8 of 10 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Next up for the Bison is a home date with No. 18/19 Army next Saturday at noon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
