LEWISBURG, Pa. – Gunnar Fellows scored the game's first three goals on the way to a seven-point afternoon, leading No. 18/19 Army West Point to a 14-8 win over Bucknell on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison fell to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights improved to 8-3, 3-2.
Bucknell played a strong second half, and it was just a three-goal game at 11-8 with five minutes to play, but Army scored a couple of empty-netters in the late stages to pull away.
Down 11-5 after Fellows' fourth goal of the day at the 11:44 mark of the fourth quarter, Bucknell got back in it with three straight from Peter Grandolfo, Sean Berrigan, and Michael Meyer. The Bison had been controlling the faceoff game up until that point, winning 14 of the first 23, but the Black Knights claimed the next three and scored after each one.
Cal Lambert answered the Meyer goal to make it 12-8, and Evan Plunkett scored twice with the goalie out of the crease to make the final 14-8.
The Bison had a big hill to climb after Army scored the first four goals of the day and took a 7-2 lead to the halftime break. The Black Knights rank ninth nationally in scoring defense, and they became the first team this season to hold the Bison in single digits. Bucknell's previous low was 11 goals in an 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure.
Berrigan scored two goals, Sean Murray had two assists, and Anthony Panetti logged a goal and an assist for the Bison. Jaz Zanelli made six saves in goal, and Jack Tully led the defensive unit with four ground balls. Colin McLoy (8-17) and Zach Hepworth (6-9) handled the faceoff duties.
Fellows finished with four goals and three assists, and Plunkett had three goals and four assists to lead Army. Goalie Sean Byrne also tallied six saves.
Bucknell outshot Army 39-37, but Army won the ground ball battle 38-30.
The Bison are back in action next Saturday at Boston University. The Terriers entered the day tied for first place with Loyola but fell 19-11 to the Greyhounds in Baltimore. Loyola scored 12 of the game's first 13 goals.
