Second Half Scoring Surge Earns #22 Army Win Over Bucknell Women's Lacrosse

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Army West Point rode a second half scoring surge to defeat Bucknell 16-7 on Saturday afternoon in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. After the first half ended with Army up 6-4, the Black Knights came into the second half with a much more aggressive offensive force and went on a 10-3 run to earn the conference win.
With the loss, the Bison fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League. Bucknell also was handed its first home loss of the season by the Black Knights.
The first half of the game was a low-scoring defensive effort as the Black Knights took a 6-4 lead into halftime. Both teams struggled with turnovers as there were 24 first half turnovers and 11 caused turnovers. Army pulled away in the third quarter as it outscored Bucknell 3-1, with the Bison's lone goal coming midway through the quarter before the remainder went scoreless. The fourth quarter went all Army as it recorded 7 goals to Bucknell's two, extending its lead and taking the victory.
Caleigh Cummiskey led the Bison in scoring as she notched a hattrick with two of her three goals coming in the fourth quarter. Regan Sansiviero had two goals and Caroline Sheridan and Megan Krestinski rounded out Bucknell scoring with one goal each.
Bella Crowley came up big for the Bison in the back of the net to keep the game close as she recorded 14 saves in the contest. She ended the game with a .467 save percentage on 16 goals against.
The Bison had four assists throughout the game with Cummiskey leading the group with two, giving her five points on the day. Krestinski and Alex Macutek each recorded one assist to round out the Bucknell assists on the afternoon.
Army recorded 18 ground balls to Bucknell's 16. Annie Cornell and Katie Browne led the team in ground balls with three apiece.
The Black Knights dominated the draw winning 20 of the 25 draw controls on the afternoon. Of the five that Bucknell won, each was brought in by a different player.
The contest was riddled with turnovers as Army recorded 18 and Bucknell recorded 19. The Black Knights had 12 caused turnovers to Bucknell's eight. Alex Nesbitt, Regan Sansiviero and Annie Cornell led the team with two caused turnovers each.
Brigid Duffy opened the game with three consecutive goals before Regan Sansiviero put Bucknell on the board with under three minutes left in the first quarter off of a free-position goal. Army took a 3-1 lead into the second.
Duffy opened the second quarter with a man-up goal, but Caroline Sheridan answered with a free-position goal to make it a two-goal game. Allison Reilly then found the back of the net for the Black Knights, but Caleigh Cummiskey sported a spin move to make it a two goal game halfway through the second quarter. A couple of scoreless minutes later, Geneva Milch Cesoni scored a man-up goal, but Sansiviero answered as she ended the quarter with a man-up goal of her own to make it a two-goal game at halftime.
After three and a half scoreless minutes, Chloe Garett found the back of the net for Army and then four minutes and 20 seconds later, Duffy found another goal for the Black Knights to give Army its largest lead of the game thus far at four. Out of the media timeout, Ryam Remaly extended the Black Knights lead to five, but a minute and a half later, Megan Krestinski spun and sent a rocket to the back of the net for Bucknell to make it a four goal game with four minutes left in the third. The final minutes went scoreless as Army took a 9-5 lead into the fourth.
The Black Knights continued its offensive strength with five straight goals to open the fourth quarter and go up 14-5 with 11:32 remaining. Cummiskey broke the scoring run with a goal off of a Krestinski assist to make it an eight goal game with 9:38 remaining. Cummiskey then got a hattrick as she got a second consecutive goal on a man-up opportunity. Army got one more goal before the final horn blew and took a 16-7 victory in Lewisburg.
Bucknell will stay at home for its first midweek conference game of the season as it hosts Colgate on Wednesday, March 25 at 5 p.m. in Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium.
