FORT MYERS, Fla. – Amar Tahirovic reached another career milestone with a dominant win at No. 1 singles, but the Bucknell men's tennis team fell 4-1 to Florida Gulf Coast to wrap up a three-match Spring Break swing through the state of Florida.
Tahirovic entered the day needing one more victory to equal Nick Bybel's school record for combined singles/doubles wins. His doubles match with Brendan McDonald was halted at 5-5 when the Eagles clinched the point, but Tahirovic claimed a share of the record in singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Arizona State transfer Tanner Povey at the top of the lineup.
Tahirovic is now 106-24 in singles and 86-40 in doubles, good for a 192-64 combined record. Bybel went 192-67 in a brilliant career from 2012-16. Tahirovic now has his sights set on Bybel's mark of 112 singles wins.
After winning the doubles point, FGCU (8-9) finished off the match at 2, 3, and 6 singles. Stavros Hadjivarnava's close 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win over Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega was the clinching point.
McDonald won the first set from Mike Bunjes and was 6-all in the second set on Court 4 when the Eagles clinched. Will Robinson was also in a second-set tiebreaker against Gustav Hasslegren at No. 5 when play was halted.
The Bison are now 7-8 this spring and will now focus on Patriot League play, which starts next Saturday at Loyola.
