NEWARK, N.J. – Amar Tahirovic won both of his matches, but the Bucknell men's tennis team fell to a strong NJIT team by a 5-2 count on Sunday at the Raimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility. The Highlanders, who swept Navy 7-0 earlier in the season, improved to 5-2 in dual matches, while the Bison dropped to 7-5 heading into their Spring Break trip to Florida.
The afternoon started well for the Bison, as they took the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 3. Will Robinson and Nelson Alapi decided it with a dramatic 7-5 win over Yerassyl Bakhtiyar and Severin Risan at No. 3. The NJIT pair was serving for the match at 5-4, but the Bison duo broke their serve and then won the next two to take the point.
Earlier, Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald downed Riccardo Campagnola and Nejc Skorjanc 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Tahirovic was first off the singles courts after a 6-3, 6-3 win over Skorjanc at No. 1, but the Highlanders took the other five singles matches.
Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega forced a third set at No. 3 singles, coming from 1-4 down to take the second set in a tiebreaker. But Campagnola jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set and prevailed 6-3.
Tahirovic improved his career records to 104-23 in singles and 85-40 in doubles. His 189 combined wins are now just three shy of Nick Bybel's school record. Tahirovic has won 10 straight singles matches to get to 21-5 on the season.
Bucknell will next head to Florida to face Rollins (March 9), Stetson (March 13), and Florida Gulf Coast (March 15).
