Women’s Lacrosse Clips St. Bonaventure 14-13 to Get to 3-1 on Season

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Caleigh Cummiskey recorded five goals and two assists, including what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:56 to go as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team held off St. Bonaventure 14-13 on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison improved to 3-1 on the season, with the only loss coming at Penn State last Sunday.
Caroline Sheridan had a five-point day with three goals and two assists, and Megan Krestinski also notched a hat trick with an assist to help offset a five-goal game from St. Bonaventure's standout midfielder Brooke Piper.
Bucknell seemed to be in completed control, up 10-5 after Krestinski and Sheridan scored extra-player goals in the first four minutes of the second half. But the Bonnies started to dominate the draw controls and scored seven straight goals over an 11-minute span to take a 12-10 lead. Five of those scores came from the 8-meter line, three coming off the stick of Megan Schillinger.
The Bison regrouped, however, taking advantage of one of the 16 cards shown in the game. With Riley Milligan off on a green card, Cummiskey cut inside and scored off a feed from Sheridan to stop the run and make it a one-goal game. Just over a minute later, Sheridan scored on free-position shot to tie it at 12-12.
Both goalies came up with big saves in the next stretch, and with 3:57 to play Sheridan found Katie Browne all alone on the crease for the go-ahead tally. Cummiskey added a critical insurance goal with an absolute tracer to the top right corner from the 8-meter arc to make it 14-12 with 2:56 left.
Sidney Van Tassell scored her third of the day to pull one back for the Bonnies with 2:06 left, but Alex Macutek nabbed the biggest draw control of the day to help the Bison burn off some clock. St. Bonaventure did take the ball back and called timeout deep in its own end with 43 seconds left. The Bucknell ride forced the Bonnies to use considerable time to get the ball over midfield, and Bison defender Kate Hearns was bowled over near the restraining line but was issued a green card with 14 seconds left.
On the restart, Macutek jarred the ball loose from Van Tassell. Piper picked up the loose ball but her desperation shot into the body of a defender was whistled down for a yellow card with two seconds remaining, and all the Bison had to do was fling the ball downfield as time expired.
Bucknell was hot early, scoring six goals in the first quarter, including the first career tally for sophomore Estella Geller. In the second period, Regan Sansiviero made a great play to draw two defenders and find a wide-open Cummiskey on the left side to give the Bison an 8-3 lead. It was still a five-goal margin at 10-5 early in the third, when the Bonnies began their seven-goal surge.
St. Bonaventure finished with a 25-24 shot advantage, while the Bison led 14-12 in ground balls. Draw controls were 20-8 for the Bonnies, although the Bison helped nullify that advantage by forcing 16 turnovers.
Bella Crowley made six saves in goal for Bucknell, while Meredith Kearns had five in relief for St. Bonaventure after starter Judy Mahoney was pulled after conceding six goals on Bucknell's first seven shots.
Cummiskey entered the game ranked in the top-10 nationally in goals, and she now has 17 in four games to start her career. Krestinski also ranks among the nation's top point-producers, and she now has 15 goals and 10 assists on the season.
Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday at Rider at 3 p.m.
