Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison have two more home dual matches this weekend, as Georgetown visits on Friday and Johns Hopkins on Sunday. Both will be played at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport.
- Bucknell downed Mercyhurst (7-0) and Temple (5-2) at home last weekend to get to 4-2 on the season. The only losses have come to No. 10 Columbia in the season opener and a tight 4-3 verdict to a strong Delaware team.
- Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega is coming off a 3-0 weekend. He won both of his singles matches handily, including the match-clincher against Temple. He also teamed with Amar Tahirovic for a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles against Mercyhurst.
- Tahirovic also won twice in singles last weekend to run his full-season record to 16-5. Tahirovic and Will Robinson both bring five-match winning streaks into the Georgetown match on Friday.
- Tahirovic won the first two Patriot League Player of the Week awards in 2026, giving him a league-record eight in his career.
- Brendan McDonald and Tahirovic are both on record watch this spring. McDonald's 85 career doubles wins (85-34) are second-most in team history, trailing only Ryan Sandburg (87). Tahirovic's career singles record is 99-23, and he needs 13 more wins to equal Nick Bybel's mark of 112, set from 2012-16. Tahirovic ranks 3rd all-time in doubles victories with 81. He will also have a chance to surpass Sandburg's record, but McDonald will remain ahead of him as long as Bucknell's No. 1 duo continues to partner together.
- Tahirovic is also within range of the Bucknell record for combined singles and doubles victories. Bybel holds the record with 192, and Tahirovic has 180.
- Tahirovic and McDonald came one win away from an NCAA doubles bid with a big run at the ITA Conference Masters in San Diego. They won the Patriot League qualifier and then beat pairs from Boise State, UC Santa Barbara and Presbyterian to reach the semifinals. McDonald was honored with the ITA Sportsmanship Award at that event.
- Tahirovic also represented the Patriot League in singles at the ITA Conference Masters, where he beat reigning Big East Player of the Year Alejandro Gandini of DePaul in the first round before falling to Martin Birisiouk of N.C. State in three sets in the round of 16. Earlier in the fall, he played in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., where he dropped tight matches to opponents from TCU and Baylor, and he won twice in the main draw at the ITA Northeast Regional at Princeton.
- Freshman Tyler Bush saw his first dual-match action last weekend, and he won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and 6-4 at No. 2 doubles with Robinson against Mercyhurst. Against Temple, Bush fell in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles.
- This will be first meeting between the Bison and Hoyas since 2012. Georgetown leads the all-time series 11-2, including five straight wins.
- The last meeting came on March 30, 2012 in Washington, D.C., and the Hoyas won 6-1. Josh Katten won a three-set match at No. 3 singles, and he also teamed with Evan Zimmer for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
- The Hoyas are 1-2 on the season, with a 6-1 home win over Howard last Saturday on the heels of a pair of 6-1 losses to VCU and Old Dominion on the road the previous weekend.
- Georgetown is led by returning Second Team All-Big East honoree Arthur O'Sullivan, who won a team-high 16 doubles matches last season. O'Sullivan plays No. 1 singles and doubles for the Hoyas.
- The Hoyas finished 9-13 overall and 3-4 in the Big East last season. Seeded fifth in the Big East Tournament, they knocked off No. 4 DePaul 4-2 in the quarterfinals before falling 4-1 to No. 1 St. John's in the semis.
- The Blue Jays, who are No. 11 in the ITA Division III rankings, will be making their spring debut on Sunday before heading to Minnesota next week for the ITA National Indoor Championships.
- In the fall, the doubles tandem of Mukundh Boopathi and Joshua Kim won the ITA Southeast Regional title to earn ITA All-America honors and a spot in the ITA Cup. Johns Hopkins actually had three doubles teams reach the semifinals at the regional tournament, and Allen Gong made the semis in singles.
- In fall tournament play, Johns Hopkins went 61-43 in singles, led by Gong at 8-3 and Boopathi at 7-1. The Blue Jays also went 38-20 in doubles, with Boopathi and Kim combining for an 8-2 mark.
- Johns Hopkins went 16-8 in dual matches last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championship. After beating North Carolina Wesleyan and Middlebury, The Blue Jays were knocked out by second-seeded Denison 4-3 in a match that was decided in a third-set tiebreaker. At the NCAA Singles Championship later in the spring, Chakor Rajendra also advanced to the quarterfinals.
- Bucknell and Johns Hopkins met for the first time last season in South Williamsport, and Bucknell won 5-2. Adam Stavrakas beat Rajendra 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Amar Tahirovic, Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega, Liam Kilmer, and Brendan McDonald won in the 2-5 spots. Johns Hopkins won the doubles point and got a win at No. 6 singles from Zahari Stoimenov.
- Bucknell heads to Philadelphia next weekend to take on Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Drexel on Sunday at 11 a.m.
