
Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Eastern Illinois

ATHENS, OHIO- Bucknell volleyball (0-3) led two sets to one before Eastern Illinois (1-0) rallied for the victory Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Invitational. The Bison won the first set 25-19 before splitting the next two. EIU tied the match at 2-2 winning the fourth set 25-20 and conquered the day with a 15-7 victory in the winner-take-all set.Â
Bucknell had three players with double-digit kills. Bri Frazilus led the team with 16 kills and collected 13 digs. Sidney Shaffer added 14 kills on a remarkable .433 hitting percentage. Tijana Kostic supplied 12 kills and 16 digs.Â
The Bison gathered 74 digs to the Panthers' 62 but EIU edged Bucknell in kills, 61-53.Â
The teams battled back-and-forth in the first set with EIU taking a slight 10-9 lead. The Bison reeled off six straight points and never trailed again in the segment. The Panthers clawed within five points but kills by Kostic and Shaffer won the set.Â
Bucknell tied EIU several times in the second set but never led. EIU kept extending its lead throughout the set and eventually won 25-18.Â
The third set was a tightly-contested affair that Bucknell won 25-23. The Bison generally led by two or three points before EIU tied it at 20-20. Two EIU errors gave Bucknell a 22-20 lead. EIU scored three more points but kills by Frazilus and Shaffer won the set.Â
EIU blitzed to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. Bucknell counterattacked and went up 8-7. The set continued to be a series of runs, as EIU sprinted ahead 16-13. The Panthers frustrated any attempt at a Bison run and completed the 25-20 set win.Â
The Bison briefly led 2-1 in the fifth set before the Panthers stormed ahead 9-4. Bucknell went on a 2-0 run and EIU called a timeout. The strategy worked perfectly, boosting EIU to the 15-7 set win and, by extension, the game win.Â
