Lucas' Late Winner Lifts Bison to 2-1 Victory Over No. 23 Hofstra in Season Opener

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y – Junior Jack Lucas' 75th minute match-winning goal gave the Bison a hard-fought 2-1 win over No. 23 Hofstra in the season opener at Captains Field on Thursday night. The Bison went down early before freshman Jacob Thomas equalized with a strike from distance for his first career goal in the Orange and Blue.
The Bison return home with a big win over a top-ranked side that was picked 23rd in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll. The Pride won the Coastal Athletic Association last season and fell 2-1 in the NCAA tournament to the reigning national champions, Vermont.
Lucas' strike came just outside of the box off of a headed clearance. Bucknell's top point scorer from last season took a brilliant touch past a defender into space and quickly fired his shot into the top right corner for the lead.
Senior goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth made four second half saves, totaling six saves in the match. His biggest moment came in the 65th minute as a ball over the back line sent Hofstra's goal scorer Daniel Burko in on goal with only the keeper to beat. Lapworth made a great reaction, sprawling out of his box to deny the scoring opportunity and keep the score level.
Burko's goal came in the 29th minute to put the Pride in front 1-0. Bucknell was caught out defensively as a cross from just outside of the box carried over the back line to an open Burko on the far side, who dove for a header at point-blank range in front of the net.
The Bison responded well to the goal as Thomas, a center back, fired a shot from distance to equalize 1-1. Thomas stepped up from the back line to win possession back and spun between two defenders to find himself with plenty of space carrying towards the goal. A hard, low drive short-hopped the net minder as the ball deflected into the top of the net for Bucknell's first goal of the season.
Junior David Krumov nearly put the Bison in front in the 58th minute with another strike from distance. Krumov fired to the near post, forcing a save from the net minder before it ricocheted off of the crossbar. Senior Zane Domsohn pounced on the deflection, but good defending from the Pride forced his header wide.
Hofstra was dangerous on the attack, but the Bison held together to keep the Pride off of the score sheet for the final 60 minutes of the match. The Pride out-shot the Bison 12-8 with seven shots on goal and had eight corners in the match. Bucknell finished with sic shots on target and three corners.
"It was a very good effort and great mentality from the guys for a come-from-behind win," said head coach Dave Brandt. "I'm happy with the goals, but it's critical that we play our style and that carries to both sides of the ball. That's the most important thing, especially in the long run."
The Bison are back in action this Sunday at 6 p.m. against St. Bonaventure for the home opener at Emmitt Field.

Silky smooth from Jacob Thomas to equalize just before the half for the freshman's first collegiate goal! #rayBucknell #pltop3 @PatriotLeague pic.twitter.com/E8k3Tcij0W
