YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bucknell rowing team finished in second place in an eight-team field at the Ford Lake Cup, hosted by Eastern Michigan on Saturday morning. The Bison placed in the top four in all three scored races, led by wins from the Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four. The Varsity Eight placed fourth.
Delaware captured the 1V8+ final, which propelled the Blue Hens to the team title with 32 points. Bucknell was second with 27, followed by Massachusetts (24), Eastern Michigan (14), Temple (14), West Virginia (8), High Point (4), and Duquesne (3).
All three Bucknell boats won their preliminary heats to advance to the A Final. The 2V8+, under the direction of coxswain Hattie Hopper and stroked by Victoria Miller-Tuchon, clipped West Virginia by just over one second to win its heat, and then the Bison (6:55.8) outrowed runner-up Delaware by two seconds in the final. Eastern Michigan was third, followed by West Virginia, UMass, and Temple.
The 1V4+ easily won its heat, with second-place West Virginia nearly nine seconds back. Bucknell went more than a second faster in the final with a winning time of 7:46.5. UMass was second in 7:48.5, with Delaware a distant third. Coxswain Caroline Wieland paced Kona Glenn, Maeve O'Keefe, Clara Eikeboom, and Campbell Coonley.
Bucknell's 1V8+, coxed by Katie Lash and stroked by first-year Sadye Levensten, finished in a dead heat with UMass with a time of 6:34.4 in the prelims. Those were tied for the second-fastest qualifying times behind Delaware, and the Blue Hens came back to win the final, with UMass second, Temple sneaking into third, and the Bison fourth.
High winds later in the day forced the cancellation of Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight races.
The Bison are now three weeks away from the Patriot League Championships on the Cooper River in New Jersey. They will have one more tune-up, the Women's Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on May 4.
