Softball Brushes Aside Colgate in 5-0 Victory for Series Sweep
4/20/2025 3:45:00 PM | Softball
LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell softball (14-24, 5-10 Patriot League) completed the weekend sweep of Colgate (13-28, 3-9 Patriot League) and moved its winning streak to a season-high five games with a 5-0 takedown of the Raiders on Easter Sunday. The sweep allows Bucknell to largely control its fate for the fourth and final Patriot League Tournament seed. The Orange & Blue have three conference games remaining at Holy Cross on May 3-4. Bucknell had not swept Colgate since the 2019 campaign.
Savannah Jones threw her second two-hit shutout of the weekend as the Colgate batters were helpless against the senior's silky smooth changeup. Jones registered four strikeouts and only allowed two walks in 82 total pitches.
The Bison offense, silent for most of the game, broke out for four insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Bucknell pitching staff headlined the weekend sweep, allowing only four runs and zero bombs to the Patriot League's most potent long-ball offense.
Head coach Sarah Caffrey spoke about the weekend:
"I'm so proud of this team and group of seniors for what they were able to accomplish this weekend. We knew we needed to keep forward momentum and to watch them just compete every pitch and every inning was so fun to see. Savannah and Maddie were so good in the circle and really set the pace. Their ability to keep Colgate off balance was really impressive because that is a team that knows how to score runs. Our defense was very clean behind them and we had timely hitting. I loved our approach at the plate and each game was different. It all really came together when we needed it to and I know there is a lot of confidence right now for this team."
One of Colgate's few threats started in the first inning. Jillian Herbst walked on four pitches and Quinn Livesay singled. Lily Haluska flew out to right field and Herbst advanced to third. A second fly out to right field ended the threat.
The Bison tallied a run in the second inning. Angelina Seropian, with two outs, hit a blooper to second base that died before any Raider fielder could capture it. Bella Radican doubled to right center and Haley Speicher walked to load the bases. Ava Aguilar worked a six-pitch walk to score the game's first run. Jones smashed a hard line drive but the ball went right to the shortstop, stranding all three runners.
Colgate nearly tied the game in the next half inning. Claire Whalen walked with one out. Herbst reached on a fielder's choice when the Colgate star hit a grounder to Molly Lawson. Lawson's throw to second pulled Radican off the bag and both runners were safe. Livesay popped up for the second out. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. The danger passed when Haluska's grounder was handled by Lawson.
Neither side scored again until Bucknell purchased four insurance runs. Marissa Rapino, pinch hitting for Seropian, drew a leadoff walk. Sarah Zimmerman, known for her speed, substituted for Rapino. Radican's grounder moved her to second. Speicher walked again, contributing to her weekend on-base percentage of .833. Aguilar poked a single and Zimmerman zoomed around third to score. Both Aguilar and Speicher advanced a base on the relay throw. Jones helped her cause with a double that just skirted fair over the third base line, scoring both runners. Brooke Popella doubled in nearly the same spot, making it 5-0.
Jones did not allow any seventh inning drama. The first two Colgate batters swung on the first pitch and flew out. Mackenzie Lewis lasted five pitches and struck out looking to end the game.
Bucknell completes its 2025 home schedule this Thursday with a doubleheader versus MAAC foe Iona. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
