UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State (27-15) used three home runs as the Nittany Lions slugged their way to the 11-3 (5) victory on Tuesday night in Bucknell's final regular season non-conference game. Bucknell fell to 6-29-1.
Sarah Zimmerman started in the circle for the Bison. Penn State scored first after a series of Bucknell miscues. Zimmerman got the leadoff hitter, Breanna Hanik, swinging, but the ball escaped Angelina Seropian and the Nittany Lion reached safety. Hanik swiped second and advanced to third after Seropian's throw bounced into center field. Reagan Powell made a nice play on Allison Oneacre's liner. Zimmerman's pitch escaped and plunked Brooke Klosowicz. Penn State executed a double steal opportunity to score Hanik. Bucknell nabbed Klosowicz as a consolation prize.
Bucknell's typical bugaboos returned in the second inning as Zimmerman allowed three walks, including a leadoff free pass. Seropian caught one stealing. Hanik slammed a three-run bomb over the center field wall for a 4-0 PSU lead.
Penn State continued its power barrage in the next inning. Gabby Gradishar singled to right center and Michaela Barbanente homered to right center. That concluded Zimmerman's night. Nina Barrouk entered the circle. A new pitcher yielded the same result as Natalie Lieto homered over the 220-foot sign in center. Madison Seidel singled and Hanik continued her hot night with an RBI double over Shea Malone's head. Oneacre found the gap for another RBI double. Klosowicz clubbed a third straight RBI double. Mea Consentino substituted in and found the third out.
Bucknell loaded the bases in the fourth inning. Brooke Popella and Molly Lawson singled. Meadow Gambacurta struck out. Malone walked on four straight pitches. Addison Taft reached on a fielder's choice when Penn State went to home plate for the out. Reagan Powell delivered a solid two-run single up the middle.
The Bison kept the game alive in the fifth inning. Haley Speicher singled up the middle and Popella cracked her 15th double of the season, scoring the senior. Popella moved into a tie for third place in Bucknell history for single season doubles and will continue to remain top ten nationally in doubles per game.
Macy Chamberlin led off the inning with a double and Jordyn Jochims singled to a diving Popella. A fly out followed by an infield single dribble to load the bases. Gradishar hit a sacrifice fly for the walkoff win.
Bucknell faces Lehigh this weekend for a pivotal series of Patriot League games.
