CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- The Bucknell Bison softball team split day one of the Cathy Maynard Invitational dropping a 10-0 five-inning affair to UMass Lowell but rebounded to defeat App State 5-3.
Bucknell (6-9) generated little offense - only three hits - but took advantage of six App State errors and received a complete game effort from Savannah Jones to edge the Sun Belt foe.
UMass Lowell Recap
Madison Roukey started in the circle but did not escape the first inning. Two singles and a sacrifice bunt scored the first run. UMass Lowell's Isabel Quintanilla picked a timely situation for the Riverhawks's first home run of 2025 with a two-run blast. More two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Roukey temporarily stabilized the situation with a strikeout. Two additional singles scored three runs and chased Roukey from the circle. Head coach Sarah Caffrey tabbed freshman Payton Hale to douse the flames and she did by inducing a pop-up.
Lowell tallied three more runs in the third inning. Two singles and a wild pitch scored the first run and forced Hale from the game. Sarah Zimmerman entered the fray. A single and a grounder placed runners on second and third with two outs. Quintanilla lofted a fly ball to Haley Speicher but the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year uncharacteristically mishandled the sphere and both runners scored.
UMass Lowell added an insurance run in the next inning. Two singles and a Nicole Lioumis error loaded the bases allowing an RBI grounder to score the tenth run.
The Bison plated two hits preventing a no-hitter but were unable to score any runs.
App State Recap
Jones started in the circle and produced a worthy effort for her third win of 2025. The senior pitcher threw a complete game with six strikeouts.
Appalachian State scored first tallying two runs in the second inning. A leadoff walk proved poisonous when a single and a double drove in the first run. A Brooke Popella error scored the second run. Jones prevented further damage with a swinging strikeout.
The Bison struck for a single tally in the fifth inning. Popella reached on an error by the left fielder and advanced to second. Kate Dailor pinch ran for the shortstop. Marissa Rapino continued her strong 2025 season with an RBI single.
Bucknell seized the lead in the sixth inning by capitalizing on App State's hot potato habits. Ava Aguilar led off with a double and advanced to third on Jones's productive fly ball. Makenzie Hilling came through like a true senior smashing an RBI single to left field and tying the game at 2-2. App State substituted pitchers but the Bison were game for more runs. Popella laid down a bunt and reached on the catcher's throwing error. A Rapino grounder advanced both runners. A muffed throw by the first baseman allowed Lioumis to reach safety and for Hilling and Popella to score.
The Orange & Blue added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Speicher reached on an error by the second baseman who compounded her mistake with a wild throw allowing the speedy slapper to reach third. Another muffed throw by the first baseman scored Speicher.
App State fought hard to the end. A leadoff single started the inning followed by two straight outs. A double scored the runner but a fly out ended the contest.
