EASTON, Pa. – Red-hot Lafayette jumped out to a big early lead and never looked back, defeating Bucknell 14-5 in Patriot League men's lacrosse action Friday night at Fisher Stadium. Riley Sullivan tallied three goals and four assists for the Leopards, who won their fourth straight game to improve to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. Luke Brunner and Will Hopkins scored twice each and Michael Meyer handed out two assists to reach the 100-point mark for his career, but the Bison saw their two-game winning streak end and fell to 4-5, 2-3.
Bucknell came in with a 48-8 lead in the all-time series, but this one was all Leopards right from the start. They scored three times in the first 5:32 and led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter and 10-0 at the half. Lafayette added one more to the run early in the third quarter to go up 11-0 before Will Hopkins got the Bison on the board at the 8:42 mark.
Backup goalie Parker Day made some nice saves as the Bison defense held Lafayette scoreless for more than 15 minutes, and three straight goals from Brunner, Sean Berrigan, and Hopkins in a span of only 2:23 made it an 11-4 game with 11 minutes still to play. Lafayette took the momentum back when goalie Joe Doherty robbed Berrigan on the doorstep with the Bison up a man, and then Joshua Heaney scored his fifth goal of the night in transition the other way with 9:02 remaining.
Day finished with eight saves while allowing seven goals in relief of starter Luke Renaud. Doherty registered 13 saves for the Leopards, backstopping an outstanding defensive performance against a Bison squad that came in ranked first in the Patriot League and seventh nationally in scoring at 14.75 goals per game.
Meyer now has 50 goals and 50 assists for an even 100 points in his career. Connor Davis was denied a milestone as he was held without a goal for only the fourth time in his career. Davis remains tied with Justin Zackey for Bucknell's career goals record with 138.
Lafayette finished with a 39-32 shot advantage and led 30-26 in ground balls. The Bison won 13 of the 23 faceoffs. Colin McLoy had a good night at the X, going 10-for-16 with five ground balls.
The Bison return to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 against Loyola at noon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
