Lewisburg, Pa. - Bucknell women's lacrosse earned its first Patriot League win of the season by defeating Lehigh for the first time in 16 years and for the first time on home turf since 2006, 12-6. With the win, the Bison move to 5-5 overall on the season and 1-2 in conference play.Â
Megan Krestinski had a killer game for the Bison as she notched a career-high five goals in the contest and earned four draw controls, leading the team in both stat categories. Alex Macutek also set a career-high in goals with two in the game. Allie Boyce recorded two goals as well which puts her just nine goals shy of the program record for total career goals. Other Bison that found the back of the net against the Mountain Hawks are Alex Nesbitt, Kat Reynolds and Caroline Sheridan who all had one goal on the evening.
The Bison's defense had a strong second half of the game only allowing Lehigh to score two goals to their five in the final 30 minutes. Bucknell was effective in crashing on the player with the ball and used that strategy to fluster Lehigh's offense and force them to take shots that weren't ideal in placement leaving the Mountain Hawks with just 16 shots on goal throughout the game. The Bison also played an aggressive ride between the 30's and caused 14 turnovers to aid in their defensive success.Â
Along with Bucknell's defensive efforts getting in Lehigh's way, the Mountain Hawks offense was also struggling to complete successful passes, having 22 turnovers to the Bison's 15. Bucknell was able to effectively take advantage of these turnovers throughout the second half to extend its lead and secure the streak-breaking win.
The first half was a close battle as both teams were scoring in a back-to-back fashion. Bucknell opened the game with a rocket goal from Nesbitt and was able to maintain a two-goal lead going into the half 7-5, before having that explosive second half and taking the contest 12-6 in the end.
Bucknell found a lot more success on the draw control than normal going 9-for-21 at the circle. Krestinski was a firecracker on the draw which helped the energy and fast pace on the Bison's attack.
ÂColleen Kazanjian played all 60 minutes in the net for Bucknell and recorded 10 saves on the night, posting a .625 save percentage. She also came up with a couple of big saves in the fourth quarter to hold the Mountain Hawks to zero goals in that final fifteen minutes.
ÂThe Bison will return to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m. to take on Holy Cross in their Senior Day game.
