Three pitchers appeared for the Bison while Boston's Kasey Ricard hurled all 15 innings, eclipsing the 260+ pitch mark. Bucknell kept pace with the two-time defending Patriot League champions before a seven-run 15th inning ended the upset dreams. It was the longest game in Bison history since a 19-inning classic against Colgate in 1997 - the Patriot League record.
Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison and immediately run into trouble. Kylie Doherty draw a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second, and then stole third base. Catcher Reagan Powell allowed a passed ball to score the Terrier.
Doherty again scored for Boston when she led off in the third inning. A passed ball moved her to second and a Brooke Deppiesse single scored the Terrier leadoff hitter.
Bucknell counterattacked in its third frame with four runs. Powell atoned for the passed balls with a single and Ava Aguilar tripled home the freshman. Haley Speicher slapped a ball to the third baseman who threw home to nab Aguilar but the catcher dropped the ball tying the score. Speicher stole second and came on Brooke Popella's double. Jones batted a ball back to Ricard who ruined the easy out by throwing the ball 10 feet over her first baseman's head. Nicole Lioumis lined out but Bucknell led 4-2.
The Bison missed a key insurance run in the fourth inning. Powell tripled with one out but Bella Radican struck out swinging and Aguilar grounded out.
Boston equalized the game in the fifth inning. Angelina Seropian was substituted at catcher for Powell. Livia Christopher led off with a single. Doherty followed with a fielder's choice. Popella mishandled Deppiesse's grounder and a passed ball advanced both runners to third and second. Another passed ball sent Christopher dashing for home. Lafayette transfer Megan Coyle singled home Deppiesse to tie the game.
A long scoring drought ensured with neither team scoring again until the 14th inning. The game did not turn dull. Instead, it was fraught with chances and drama.
Madison Roukey entered the circle in the seventh inning and pitched well until the scoring renewed in the 14th inning. Boston nearly grabbed the lead when Deppiesse singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Roukey struck out Coyle to end the threat.
Both teams had credible chances to seize the advantage in the 12th inning. Coyle and Libby Walsh drew two-out walks on Roukey. Ava Johnson was inserted to run for Coyle. Aimee Metz singled up the middle. Speicher, the preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, threw the ball home. MaKenzie Hilling relayed the throw to the reentered Powell who tagged Johnson. Boston coaches argued for interference but the umpire maintained his call.
Bucknell suffered massive heartbreak in its 12th frame. Radican singled and advanced to second when the right fielder Metz bobbled the ball. Aguilar sacrificed her teammate to third. Speicher walked and stole second. The opportunity was prime. Hilling struck out looking in an epic nine-pitch at-bat. Popella hit a ball up the middle but Ricard's leg deflected the ball to her shortstop who threw across the diamond to nab Popella.
Boston blitzed for three runs in the 14th inning. Doherty smoked a single off Lioumis at third base. Deppiesse sacrificed her to third base. Sydney Pecoraro was hit by a pitch. Ricard pinch ran for the plucked batter. Coyle found a gap with a double and scored both runners. Libby Walsh tripled to score Coyle and the Terriers looked secured in their lead.
The Bison refused to die. Powell struck out to begin the frame but Radican and Aguilar hit back-to-back singles. Speicher's double fell past a lunging glove and Radican scored. Hilling doubled off the right field wall coming tantalizingly close to a walk-off home run. The winning run was on second but Popella and Jones both flew out to leave the opportunity stranded.
The Terriers capitalized on the new life scoring seven runs in the 15th inning. A lineout to Roukey began the inning but the next missile up the middle flew past her. Doherty singled again and Deppiesse doubled for the first run. Sarah Zimmerman rushed into the circle but Boston smelled blood and their at-bats continued to attack. Pecoraro walked. Coyle doubled to the wall and advanced to third when Rapino couldn't corral the sphere. Two runners crossed. Walsh reached on an error when Rapino dropped a fly ball. Coyle dashed home. Another single scored Walsh. A walk and a single tallied the seventh run.
Bucknell's magic ran out. Powell recorded a single but Ricard induced the final out.
