Softball Takes Doubleheader over Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- Bucknell softball (9-13) gathered momentum before opening conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Wagner (8-11) defeating the Seahawks 8-1 and 5-2. The Bison combined strong pitching and clutch scoring to handle the NEC foe.
Nicole Lioumis headlined the first game hitting two home runs and becoming the first Bison to earn the feat since Taylor Wolfgang against Lafayette on March 27, 2021. Savannah Jones and Madison Roukey worked together to hold the Seahawks to one run.
Sarah Zimmerman threw a complete game in the second contest and the Bison scored three of their five runs on stolen bases and wild pitches.
"We went into this series excited for the opportunity to put things together and I loved the way we competed today," said head coach Sarah Caffrey. "We had tough pitching, great defense, and our hitting was dominant. Our ability to hit with two strikes and two outs speaks to how gritty we can be and all the work they have put in. I'm just really happy for them to see it click today. Our next step is to continue to build on it as we head into our Patriot League season and I know we're all very excited to do that."
Game One Recap
The first inning had been a recent pitfall for the Bison but senior captain MaKenzie Hilling prevented that downfall with a two-run single. Haley Speicher singled and an errant pitch plucked Shea Malone. Hilling delivered her single to center field and a misplay by the center fielder guaranteed both runners would score.
Jones started in the circle and threw three shutout innings.
Bucknell added another run in the second inning. Another bad pitch hit Angelina Seropian and the catcher advanced to second on a grounder. The Wagner first baseman misplayed Speicher's grounder and Seropian rounded third to score.
Roukey entered the circle in the fourth inning and ran into trouble. A leadoff walk almost turned into a run but a double play at home prevented any Wagner tallies.
The Bison added another run in the following frame. Hilling singled and Kate Dailor ran for the first baseman. A Brooke Popella double set up second and third. A wild pitch allowed Dailor to scamper home.
Wagner broke through for a run in its fifth frame. Two singles were interspersed between two swinging strikeouts. A walk loaded the bases and a second free pass scored the run. Roukey remained stoic and induced the third out.
Lioumis got the run back in the next inning with a solo shot down the left field line.
Bucknell tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh inning. Hilling led off with a walk and Jones singled down the left field line. Lioumis clubbed a massive blow over the center field wall and the Bison greeted her in celebration at home plate.
Roukey finished off Wagner with a 1-2-3 inning.
Game Two Recap
Hilling again set the tone in the first inning. The first baseman provided an RBI double for the 1-0 lead.
Zimmerman performed admirably but ran into immediate trouble allowing Wagner to tie the game 1-1. The Seahawks hit their own RBI double.
Bucknell forged ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning. Rookie Reagan Powell doubled with two outs and Bella Radican singled to third base. The Bison ran the old double steal tactic and Powell slid home safety beating the cutoff throw.
The Bison supplied three insurance runs in the sixth inning. Powell again sparked the action with a double. Marissa Rapino pinch hit for Radican and delivered an RBI single. Ava Aguilar followed with a single. Speicher advanced both runners to second and third with a grounder. A wild pitch scored Rapino and a second wild throw allowed Aguilar to dash home.
Wagner copied Bucknell's strategy in their sixth at-bat. Two singles and a fly out placed a Seahawk at third. Zimmerman uncorked a wild pitch and the Seahawks had their second run. Zimmerman did not allow another run as a grounder and a stealing attempt were turned into outs.
The Seahawks made the final stanza dramatic. A walk and a double placed runners on second and third and brought the tying run to the plate. Zimmerman induced a pop-up and Lioumis squeezed the spinning sphere.
