Men's Lacrosse Makes History with Second Straight 20-Goal Performance in 21-8 Win over St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – For the first time in school history, the Bucknell men's lacrosse team scored at least 20 goals in consecutive games on its way to a 2-0 start to the season and a 21-8 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon at the Tom 80' and Michelle Marra Athletics Field Complex.
Senior Connor Davis scored five goals to bring his career total to 121, passing Tom Cusick '87 and Todd Heritage '14 for second-most in Bucknell history.
Junior Michael Meyer led the Bison with six points, scoring four goals with two assists. This was his second straight game with four goals and he and Davis lead the team with 14 points apiece through two games. Sophomore Luke Brunner scored his first career hat-trick. Sophomore Peter Grandolfo and freshman Anthony Panetti each scored two goals for the Bison.
Junior Chris Begier scored his first goal of the season, as did senior Jack Dudas and freshman Sean Kerwick. Kerwick's goal was the first of his career. Juniors Owen Kovacs and Will Hopkins rounded out Bucknell's 10 goal scorers, each scoring a goal. Sophomore Sean Berrigan had three helpers in the game.
Bucknell controlled the first half, scoring the first seven goals of the game. The Bison led 3-0 with two goals from Davis and one from Panetti after the first quarter despite having 14 shots. St. Bonaventure's Isaac Farmer made several incredible saves to keep the Bison in check, but it was only a matter of time before the flood gates opened.
The Bison scored four goals in the first eight minutes of the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Meyer, Brunner, Kovacs and Grandolfo all found the back of the net as the Bison spread the goals among six different players early on.
The Bonnies showed some life with two quick goals in 90 seconds, but Meyer and Panetti each bagged their second goals of the game to restore the seven-goal advantage. St. Bonaventure cut the deficit to 9-3 in the final seconds as Drew Kenney
beat the halftime buzzer with a shot.
St. Bonaventure carried the momentum into the second half with a goal by Jake Kucinski in the first two minutes of the third quarter. The Bison answered with the next four goals, extending its lead to 13-4. Davis scored his third and fourth goals, and Hopkins and Brunner joined in on the action.
After two more goals from the Bonnies in the third, the Bison slammed the door with five goals in the final 3:25 of the quarter. Grandolfo started the run with his second of the game before Brunner and Davis scored quickly after. Meyer scored twice in the final 1:05, scoring the second with two second on the clock.
Begier, Dudas and Kerwick all scored their first goals of the season in the fourth. The Bison defense hammered down in the fourth, only allowing two goals on its way to the 21-8 victory.
The Bison out-shot the Bonnies 59-33 in the game. Junior Luke Renaud made eight saves in goal for Bucknell. The Bison only committed 10 turnovers in the game and forced 12 of St. Bonaventure's 21 turnovers.
The Bison are back in action on the road next Saturday at Dartmouth, set for a 1 p.m. start.
