HANOVER, N.H. – A seven-goal second quarter by Dartmouth was the big difference in the game as the Bucknell men's lacrosse team was handed its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. The Bison rallied for four straight goals to tie the game 11-11 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Big Green quickly answered with two goals to hang on to win 13-11.
Entering the game as the nation's leading goal-scorer, senior Connor Davis scored four more goals to bring his season tally to 17 goals through the first three games. Davis scored at least four goals in each of first three games and is 13 goals away from equaling Justin Zackey's school-record of 138 goals.
Junior Michael Meyer scored a hat-trick for the third straight game and added three assists. Davis added an assist and eight of the Bison goals in the game came on a score or assist by Davis or Meyer. Meyer and Davis lead the Bison in points with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Meyer has at least six points in all three games and Davis has at least five.
Senior Cam Doolan had two points for the Bison with a goal and an assist, and junior Owen Kovacs, sophomore Peter Grandolfo and sophomore Sean Berrigan each found the back of the net.
The Bison had scored three straight goals to close out the first quarter with a 4-2 lead before Dartmouth flipped the script. Two goals in the first 90 seconds of the quarter tied the game 4-4, the second of which came on an incredible full-field heave by Griffin O'Neil.
Dartmouth scored three more goals before Kovacs answered to cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Big Green scored twice in the final 2:31 to take a 9-5 halftime lead.
Trailing 11-7 with under three minutes to play in the third quarter, the Bison rallied off a run of four goals to tie the game with 11:29 left to play in the fourth. A good string of passes led to an open Davis in front of goal, and junior Will Hopkins found Davis for an easy goal. Just a minute later, Meyer made it an 11-9 game.
The momentum continued into the fourth as Davis scored again to bring the Bison within one. The Bison quickly tied the game 90 seconds later as Davis found Meyer cutting from behind the net, scoring at a tough angle.
Dartmouth had the answer again, scoring midway through the fourth to take the lead. Thomas Power's fifth goal of the game made it 13-11 with 4:29 remaining, and the Big Green stifled the Bison over the remainder of the game to hold on.
Power led the Big Green with a seven-point game on five goals and two assists. Emmmett Paradine and Colin McGill each had two goals.
After the Bison dominated faceoffs in its first two match-ups, Dartmouth controlled this one with a 17-9 advantage on faceoffs. The Big Green also won 33 groundballs compared to Bucknell's 20.
The Bison are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Hobart for a 1 p.m. match up.
