
UVM Rides Fourth Quarter Performance to Win over Bison

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Bucknell women's basketball (3-6) fell to the University of Vermont (7-3) 64-48 on Friday night in Patrick Gymnasium. The Bison came back from a nine-point first quarter deficit to take a lead in the third, but it wouldn't be enough as the Catamounts would outscore the Bison 26-16 in the final ten minutes to take the home win.
Elana Weisman led the team in scoring with 16 points on the evening on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, 2-for-2 from three and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. She also had two rebounds, two steals and one assist. Hope Masonius made her first collegiate start in the loss and broke her career high in points with 14 on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the free-throw line. She also recorded three rebounds, one assist and two steals, which are all new career-highs for the Bison that previously struggled with injury last season. Isabella Casey led the team in rebounds with four.
The Bison shot 37.5% from the field and from three in the loss. They shot 78.9% overall from the free-throw line.
The Catamounts were led by Jadyn Weltz, who had 17 points in the contest. Despite being limited to just seven points in the second quarter, the Catamounts came into the second half swinging and were able to find the consistent offensive success in the fourth quarter that both teams were looking for to create separation and earn the victory in Burlington.
Weltz opened the game with five points for UVM before Weisman hit a three for the Bison. The Catamounts then hit back-to-back shots to go up 9-3. Coskun cut the lead with a driving layup, but Vermont went into the media timeout with a 13-5 lead and three-minutes left in the quarter. Out of the break, Coskun hit a three to make it a five-point game. The Catamounts answered with a basket of their own and held a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bison were able to come back in the second quarter and outscore the Catamounts 12-7 to cut its deficit to four at halftime. After giving up 17 points in the first, Bucknell's defensive efforts proved to be successful in the second quarter as it limited Vermont to just seven points. Bucknell opened the second quarter with a Masonius basket and UVM quickly answered with one of their own. The Bison then went on an 8-0 run thanks to a series of steals. Six of the points came from Weisman and the other two came from Masonius free-throws to cut the Bison deficit to one. Vermont cut the run with a Hanson jumper to extend its lead to three with just under three-minutes left in the half. After about two scoreless minutes, Coskun hit a jumper and Vermont ended the half with a three-pointer to take a 24-20 lead.
The third quarter went even in scoring with both teams putting up 12 points in the ten minutes of play. Masonius opened the second half with a tough shot for the Bison to make it a two-point game. UVM answered with a basket of their own, but the Bison went on a 7-0 run including five points from Coskun to take a 29-26 lead at the media timeout. Priede hit two jumpers back-to-back to give Vermont the lead, but Masonius took it back for the Bison with a jumper as the shot clock ran out. The Catamounts then took a one-point lead, but not for long as Casey hit a free-throw to tie the game at 32. UVM then hit back-to-back shots to end the quarter with a 36-32 lead.
Masonius cut the deficit back to two with a basket to open the fourth. The Catamounts then went on a 11-0 run to take a 47-34 lead with six and a half minutes left to play. Masonius broke the streak with two made free-throws for Bucknell, but Lenz would hit a second-straight three-pointer for the Catamounts to give them a 13-point lead. The teams then traded points ahead of the final media timeout, where Vermont held a 52-40 lead with 4:57 left in the game. Out of the break, the Catamounts went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 18. The Bison were able to cut the deficit to 14 with one minute left, but wouldn't be able to come back from the early fourth quarter deficit to get the win. Vermont would take the contest 64-47.
Bucknell will stay up north and have a quick turnaround game against Dartmouth in New Hampshire on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
