
Bison Fall to Dartmouth 53-45

HANOVER, NH — Dartmouth (5-3) took the lead at the end of the third quarter of play and put together a 10-0 run towards the end of the fourth to earn a 53-45 home victory over Bucknell (3-7) on Sunday afternoon in Leede Arena after five minutes of scoreless play in the fourth quarter. The Bison held the lead throughout the first half of play due to an 11-0 run in the first, but struggled to keep up with the second half shooting efforts from the Big Green.
Tuana Coskun and Elana Weisman led the Bison in scoring with 11 points. Anna Kunzwiler followed closely with 10 and Isabella Casey notched 8. Casey led the team in rebounds with eight, Coskun led in assists with four and Kunzwiler led in steals with three.
Bucknell shot 38.9% from the field, which was better than Dartmouth's 37.5%, but only shot 15.8% from the three-point line, which proved to be a difference maker as the Big Green shot 34.8% from three.
The hot-shooting Dartmouth squad was led by Ninia Minicozzi who put up 14 points, shooting 3-of-5 from the three-point line in big moments of the game. The Big Green only had six personal fouls in 40 minutes of play compared to Bucknell's 15. The Bison did not shoot a single free-throw in the contest.
Dartmouth opened the game with a 6-2 run, before Casey made a layup and three-pointer back-to-back to give the Bison a 7-6 lead at the first quarter media timeout. Out of the break, the Bison defense intensified and Bucknell extended its run to 11-0 as Masonius, Coskun and Weisman each hit jumpshots. Dartmouth ended the quarter with four unanswered points to close the gap, but the Bison were able to hold onto a 13-11 lead at the end of the first.
The first 2:45 of the second quarter went scoreless as both teams struggled to land a shot. Coskun broke the scoring drought with a three, but the Big Green answered with a three-point play of their own after Mencozzi was fouled on a shot and made the free-throw to bring the game within two. The teams then traded baskets before Bucknell went on a 6-0 run with points from Kunzwiler, Casey and Hardy to take a 24-16 lead. Ahead of the media timeout, MacDonald hit a three for the Big Green to cut Bucknell's lead to five with 2:28 left in the first half. The Bison then got their fifth foul of the quarter and sent Dartmouth into the bonus, which resulted in two points for the Big Green to bring the game within four at halftime.
Dartmouth was able to cut its deficit to one twice in the third quarter before Minicozzi drained a three to give the Big Green a 34-32 lead. Weisman then hit a jumper to tie the game at 34 and the Bison defense came up with a big stop, which led to Casey getting a layup off of a rebound to put Bucknell back in the lead ahead of the media timeout. Out of the break, Ozel made two free-throws for the Big Green to tie the game at 36. Minicozzi then hit her third three-pointer of the game to give Dartmouth a 39-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The first 5:15 of the fourth quarter went scoreless. Dartmouth broke the scoring drought with a layup and the teams traded points after that with Kunzwiler hitting two shots for the Bison to bring it within three. The Big Green then used a 10-0 run to extend its lead. Despite not being able to overcome the deficit, Weisman hit the final shot of the game with a three-pointer.
Bucknell has a short break before returning to the court on Saturday, Dec. 20 to take on Gwynedd Mercy in Sojka at 2 p.m.
