YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Elana Weisman scored a career-high 17 points, but Youngstown State held off a late Bucknell charge and defeated the Bison 60-53 on Sunday afternoon at Zidian Family Arena. Anna Kunzwiler tallied nine points and matched her career high with seven rebounds for the Bison, who fell to 1-3 on the season with all three setbacks coming on the road.
Erica King led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points for the Penguins, who are now 3-1 on the campaign. Youngstown State's 42-29 rebounding advantage was a big factor in the decision. They grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, which led to 13 second-chance points.
It was just a five-point game at the half, but Youngstown State broke it open with a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter. King sparked the surge with two straight driving layups, Hayden Barrier connected on a 3-pointer off an offensive rebound kick-out, and Casey Santoro made it a 40-25 game with a pair of free throws.
The Bison closed within 40-31 on an Ella Kreuzer transition 3-pointer, but they turned it over the next three possessions, and Santoro's trey in the final 30 seconds gave the Penguins a 44-31 lead after three periods. Paulina Hernandez followed with another triple on the first possession of the fourth, and the hosts seemed to be in control from there.
The Bison had other ideas, however, trimming a 17-point deficit down to just six after an 11-0 run in a span of just 2:22. Kunzwiler was the catalyst in the surge. She scored twice in the lane and then assisted on Weisman's 3-pointer. Kunzwiler's defensive rebound led to a Weisman turnaround jumper, and Reese Zemitis capped the run with a put-back.
Barrier hit two big jumpers, including a 3-pointer, to keep the Bison from getting any closer. Danielle Cameron connected on a dagger 3-pointer with 1:31 to go, pushing the Penguins' lead back into double figures at 60-49.
Bucknell shot 39.6 percent for the game, a figure that was boosted by 7-for-13 shooting in the fourth quarter. The Bison were 5-for-19 from 3-point range and 10-for-13 from the foul line. Kunzwiler's seven rebounds tied her career high, set last season in a home win over Youngstown State. Tuana Coskun finished with seven points, and Isabella Casey and Zemitis had six each.
Barrier tallied 11 points off the bench for the Penguins, who shot only 33.9 percent from the field. They went 8-for-28 from deep and 12-for-16 from the foul line.
The Penguins ran out to a quick 9-2 lead thanks to their work on the offensive glass. Three straight offensive boards by Sophia Gregory led to a Danielle Cameron 3-pointer, and then Gregory scored herself on a layup.
Casey's deep three at the end of the shot clock got the Bison going, and two straight buckets from Weisman tied it at 9-9. Elena Houghton had a shot in the paint later overruled on replay as a shot-clock violation, but Tuana Coskun warmed up with six quick points to keep Bucknell engaged.
Youngstown State scored seven straight points to break a 15-all tie, and after a three from Anna Kunzwiler and a pretty backdoor feed from Desirae Ashton to Zemitis, Barrier's trey gave the Penguins a 25-20 lead at the half.
The Bison are back on the road again next Saturday, visiting Hofstra at 2 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y. Bucknell will be looking to avenge last season's overtime loss to the Pride.
