Hempstead, N.Y. — Bucknell women's basketball (2-3) held onto its late first quarter lead to earn its first road win of the season with a gritty 61-55 victory over Hofstra (1-3) on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. After the Pride turned its 18-point deficit to just two, Reese Zemitis hit her career-high fifth three-pointer of the game in clutch time with three-minutes remaining, which would be just enough to break the Bison's three-game losing streak on the road.
Three different Bison recorded double digit points in the win. Zemitis had a stellar performance as she ended the afternoon with a team-high 21 points, after tying her career-high with 16 in the first half. She also hit five three-pointers and seven field goals which set new career highs for her in each category. Four of the three-pointers, her previous career-high, came in the first half. Isabella Casey broke her career-high in points with 15 on the afternoon. Elana Weisman was the other Bison to hit double digits with 10 points. Kaila Richards tied her career-high in points with seven. Anna Kunzwiler led the team in rebounds with seven which tied her career high and blocks with two.
The Bison shot 39.2% from the field and made nine three-pointers in the game, which would prove to be the difference maker as the Pride only hit two threes.Â
Coskun struck first with a deep two and the teams went back and forth before Hofstra took an eight-point run. Casey drove in for the layup and was fouled on the play with 5:44 left in the quarter. She made her free throw to make it a 10-7 game, but Hofstra's Angoi hit a layup just before the media timeout. Zemitis then ignited a Bucknell spark with back-to-back three's. The Bison notched 14 unanswered points out of the media timeout, including 10 from Zemitis, to take a 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.Â
The Bison continued the scoring streak in the second quarter with six more points unanswered including a three from Weisman. With 7:31 left in the first half, Hofstra finally broke Bucknell's 20-point run with two free throws made by Angoi. Zemitis answered with an "and-one" play to swing the momentum back in the Bison's favor. Hofstra then hit a layup ahead of the media timeout to make it a 31-16 game with 4:52 remaining in the half. Out of the media timeout, Hofstra rode the momentum and hit a mid-range jumper, but Zemitis responded with her fourth made three of the afternoon, which tied her career record in made three's and points with 16. Weisman ended the half with a jumper to extend the Bison's lead to 14 at the half.Â
Bucknell extended its lead to 17 at the third quarter media timeout, with Coskun and Casey each hitting a three to bring the teams total to seven made three-pointers in the game. After the media timeout, Hofstra went on a seven-point run to bring the deficit down to 10. Zemitis broke the run with a driving layup with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter and Richards followed that up with a contested layup. The Pride answered with four points of their own before Richards hit her third field goal of the game, a new-career high, to make it 50-38 at the end of the third.Â
Hofstra opened the fourth with back-to-back layups before Casey drained a three to make it 53-42. Hofstra then brought the game within single digits with two made free-throws by Gooden. Hofstra was able to bring it within seven points at the final media timeout with three points from Magolico. Hofstra put together a multi-basket run to bring the game within two, but Zemitis would answer with her fifth three-pointer of the game, a new career-high, to give Bucknell some space with two and a half minutes remaining. Back-and-forth fouls and free-throws would take the remainder of the game and Bucknell would hold on for its first road win of the 2025-26 season.
Up next, the Bison host their education day game against Le Moyne at Sojka Pavilion on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 11 a.m.
