Volleyball Suffers Loss in Five Sets to Loyola (Md.)

BALTIMORE, Md.- Bucknell (7-12, 4-7 Patriot League) dropped its fourth straight game after falling to Loyola (Md.) (5-14, 3-7 Patriot League) in five sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 7-15) on Friday night. The Bison led two sets to one before the Greyhounds rallied to win the match to split the season series with the Orange & Blue.Â
Loyola collected 67 kills to Bucknell's 61 and outhit their foe .239 to .197. The Bison edged the Greyhounds in digs, 74-72.Â
Sidney Shaffer led the team in kills with 19 - a career-high for the junior middle blocker. Riley Tucker added 13 - another career-high for a Bison middle blocker - and Kaitlyn Taylor made it three Bison in double-digits by collecting ten.Â
Avan Nepkin paced the Greyhounds with 19 kills and added ten digs for a double-double. Addie Huber shoveled 25 digs.Â
The Bison started the match and first set on fire, jumping out to a 9-2 lead and extended its advantage to 19-10. Loyola used a 5-0 run later in the set to cut the deficit to 22-20. Bucknell won the set 25-23 when Bril Frazilus collected a kill.Â
The second set was a flurry of ties and lead changes. Loyola sneaked ahead 16-13 before Bucknell tied it up at 20-20 and 22-22. The Greyhounds used a 3-1 run to draw even with the Bison.Â
Bucknell responded with a strong 5-0 start in the third set. The run set the precedent, as the Bison never trailed in the third stanza. The Orange & Blue continued to stack points and never left the Greyhounds creep closer than three points. With Loyola trailing 23-20, a Taylor kill and a Greyhound attack error won the set for Bucknell.Â
The Bison led 16-13 in the fourth set before the Greyhounds rallied for a 5-0 run. Bucknell fought back for the 21-20 lead and was ready for the four-set win. Loyola refused to allow the result undergoing a 4-0 stretch to gain control. The teams traded points to send the match to the fifth set.Â
The fifth set started 2-0 Bucknell before the worm turned. Loyola uncorked a decisive 8-0 run and never trailed again. Two Bucknell timeouts could not stem the tide and Loyola rolled to the 15-7 set win and match victory.Â
Bucknell stays on the road tomorrow at American for a 3 p.m. matchup.Â
