LEWISBURG, Pa. – Henna Andican, one of seven seniors honored prior to the match, scored an 86th-minute equalizer to help the Bucknell women's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw with Navy on Sunday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
It was a big point for the Bison (3-7-6, 1-2-4 Patriot League), who broke a three-way tie with Lafayette and American for seventh place in the Patriot League table. Bucknell is still one point outside a top-six postseason spot, but the Bison are only three points out of fourth place with two games remaining. Navy (9-5-3, 2-2-3 PL) remained alone in fifth place with nine points.
The Andican goal broke a long scoring drought, as the Bison had been kept off the scoresheet in each of its previous four contests. They generated some good scoring chances in this one, but had nothing to show for it until scoring a beautiful team goal in the final five minutes. The build-up came straight up the middle of the park and originated from a Reese Dolan punt. Louisa Thomsen pulled it down near midfield and played a ball forward for Dani Howard. The freshman turned her defender and sent a perfect ball between the two center backs, and Andican took it early and tucked a shot from the top of the 18 inside the left post for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The work wasn't quite done, as Dolan was called upon for two saves in the last 2:15, including a tricky one on Helen Bonner's low drive with a minute to go.
Bucknell was fighting from behind for most of the match, as Bonner got the Mids on the board in the ninth minute. The goal came on a corner kick scrum, as defender Ava Palladino headed a ball off the goal line, Louisa Thomsen headed that ball away but only as far as Bonner, who volleyed home her third goal of the season.
The Bison thought they had a goal in the 31st minute when Gaby Parker swept home a shot after a long ball over the top, but she was deemed to be offside. Andican had two good looks moments later. The first was parried away by Navy keeper Natasha Stamrood, and then the second sailed over the bar from open space in the center of the area.
With 20 minutes to play, Riley Hayes fired a shot off the woodwork in the top right corner. Dolan made a huge 1v1 save on Lizzie Emerson to keep it a 1-0 game, and the Bison eventually found a well-earned goal in the late stages.
Navy finished with a 15-10 shot advantage, with Andican leading all players with six shots. Dolan tallied eight saves, while Stamrood had four. Bucknell led 8-6 in corner kicks.
Next up for the Bison is a trip to Colgate on Saturday at 1 p.m.
