LEWISBURG, Pa.- On a bright and sunny Sunday, the Bucknell Bison field hockey team (1-3) sparkled offensively and defeated the visiting UMass Lowell Riverhawks (2-2) 2-0, avenging last year's 3-2 loss. The senior class led the attack with Zoe Carlson-Pietraszek and Lily Neilson scoring their first goals of the year.Â
Bucknell outshot UMass Lowell 10-7 and recorded four penalty corners to the Riverhawks's three.Â
After going four periods and overtime without scoring against Delaware, the Bison wasted little time establishing an offensive presence against the Massachusetts team. Bay State native Carlson-Pietraszek scored in the sixth minute on a beautiful play. Fellow senior Isabella Pavlides sent in a perfect pass to Carlson-Pietraszek, who turned around and sent the shot slicing past the UMass Lowell goalkeeper.Â
Lily Neilson tallied her first goal of the season and the Bison's second of the game in the 40th minute. Kira Leclercq lifted one of her famous aerial passes down the pitch. Neilson, showing off her inherited track and field speed, chased down the loose sphere, collected the ball, maneuvered into the shooting circle, stopped, lined up her line, and fired it past the startled goalkeeper. It is the 43rd goal in her illustrious career.Â
Bucknell played steady defense and prevented any comeback opportunity. UMass Lowell pulled its goalie with four minutes remaining but the strategy did not yield any points.Â
The Bison head to the Big Apple next weekend to play Wagner (Sept. 13) and Columbia (Sept. 15).Â
