TEANECK, N.J. – The Bucknell women's soccer team settled for a 0-0 draw at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. In the last of five straight road games, Bucknell had all the good scoring chances against the Knights but had a penalty kick saved and another shot cleared off the goal line in the second half.
Bucknell (4-2-2) outshot FDU (0-3-5) 14-4 and did not concede a shot on goal all day. Meanwhile the Bison had two good looks late in the first half and a handful of chances in the second.
"It was a bit of a frustrating day for us today, we just didn't execute very well in the attacking third," said head coach Kelly Cook. "We had a few good chances and had a chance to take the lead on the PK, but we just couldn't find the back of the net. We need to be sharper going forward. I was very happy with how well we were organized in the back, and that will be key was we look ahead to league play next week."
With about 13 minutes left in the first period, Kalli Wethern played in Reese Evans, but FDU freshman goalkeeper Rosemarie Leblanc came out beyond the 18 to break up the play. Moments later, Meghan White sent a ball into the box that was flicked on by Reese Evans and then Presley Sutter headed the rebound wide.
Even though Bison keeper Jess Benattar did not have a save, she had her hands on the ball quite a bit in the second half as the Knights put several balls into the area on set pieces. FDU had a free kick from a dangerous area along the right edge of the box that was headed away by Sydney Hess, and then Benattar went up high to collect the ensuing corner kick.
Kelly Francis forced Leblanc to parry away her shot in the 56th minute, and then two minutes later the Bison earned a penalty kick after an FDU defender handled the ball in the box. After a lengthy delay while the referee sorted things out and eventually issued two yellow cards, White's spot kick was saved, as was her follow-up attempt on the rebound.
Hess headed a corner kick over the bar in the 83rd minute, and then the Bison seemed to have a goal with 3:30 to go when Riley Hayes slipped a shot past the charging Leblanc, but Elena Cvetkovic slid to wipe the ball off the goal line with only inches to spare.
Leblanc finished with seven saves in the game as the Knights garnered a draw for the fifth time in eight games. FDU went 8-2 in the Northeast Conference last season and is once again one of the favorites in the NEC.
Bucknell now turns its attention to Patriot League play. The Bison host Colgate next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the conference opener.
