Women’s Soccer Blanks Colgate 3-0 in Patriot League Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Presley Sutter scored her first collegiate goal to open the scoring late in the first half, and senior Teresa Deda added two more in the second to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Colgate on a sunny Family Weekend Saturday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Jess Benattar and the Bison defense kept its third straight clean sheet as Bucknell improved to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0 in Patriot League play.
Neither team had much going in the attacking third until Sutter's goal from out of nowhere gave the Bison the upper hand. Katie Schiano intervened on a direct ball forward in her own end, Reese Evans collected and played a long ball over the top of the Colgate back line. The substitute Sutter outmuscled a defender for the ball just inside the area and slotted a shot past charging keeper Alli Popham off the left post and in.
The Bison took the 1-0 lead to the locker room, and only 1:39 after the resumption of play Deda doubled the advantage with an audacious attempt from long range. The two-time Patriot League Midfielder of the Year maneuvered through traffic in the middle of the park before unleashing a left-footed shot over the keeper and under the crossbar.
Colgate nearly got one back midway through the second half on a rising shot by Jade Vieira that required Benattar to leave her feet and tip over the bar.
The Bison iced it in the 86th minute when Riley Hayes bent a beautiful ball through the back line to Deda, who walked in all alone and slotted home her second goal of the day and sixth of the season. It was Deda's 19th career goal, and she became the eighth player in Bucknell history to reach 70 career points.
Bucknell finished with an 11-8 shot advantage. Benattar collected four saves, while two Raiders keepers combined for four.
The Bison have nothing but Patriot League matches throughout the rest of the regular season, starting Wednesday on the road at American at 4 p.m.
