Women’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Verdict to Saint Joseph’s Despite Pressure-Filled Second Half

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sarah Fisher scored in the 12th minute and then Saint Joseph's withstood a Bucknell barrage in the second half, as the visiting Hawks held on for a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison fell to 3-3 on the season while Saint Joseph's remained unbeaten at 3-0-1.

Bucknell was coming off a hard-fought match at Penn State on Thursday while the Hawks had a full week of rest, and it showed in the early stages as Saint Joe's was on the front foot for much of the opening 45 minutes.

Just 11:08 into the contest, Olivia Benzing took the ball to the end line and centered a low cross into the 6-yard box, where Fisher slotted it home for her fourth goal in four games to start the season. Fisher nearly had a second in the 33rd minute but pulled a shot wide from space in the right side of the area. Bison freshman goalkeeper Sarah McFarland made a terrific finger-tip save on Ashley Rhodes with two minutes left in the half to get her side to the locker room down by just a goal.

Saint Joseph's turned to its freshman netminder, Lauren Lebo, in the second half, as Bucknell came out buzzing. Ingrid Murphy skimmed the crossbar from distance just two minutes after the resumption of play, and then Murphy from the same spot forced Lebo to punch over the bar about eight minutes later.

Riley Hayes curled in a ball from the left side that required a leaping save, and Dani Howard had several promising moments on the right side later in the half. Howard peeled back inside and had her shot blocked, and then Louisa Thomsen's well-struck follow attempt went just over. In 82nd minute, Howard's lefty attempt bent just wide, and then her first-touch redirect from open space in the center of the area was saved by Lebo in the 87th minute.

Bucknell finished with a 22-8 shot advantage, including a 17-2 edge in the second half. The Bison earned 12 corner kicks, nine in the second half, but could not get on the finishing end. Lebo tallied seven saves, while McFarland logged three for the Bison.

Bucknell returns home on Thursday to face Delaware at 7 p.m.
