UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Bucknell Bison softball team (12-16) fell 10-2 in six innings to Penn State (24-6) in the latest edition of the Route 45 Rivalry. The Nittany Lions jumped to a 5-0 lead before the Bison notched two runs. Penn State then scored five more runs to invoke the run-rule.
Recap
Hunter Vestal started in the circle for the Bison.
The first inning saw Penn State tallying the first run on a wild pitch. A leadoff single and two walks set up a bases-loaded situation with two outs. A wild pitch escaped Smith's lunge, and the runner darted home. Vestal remained calm and obtained a strikeout to prevent further damage.
In the second inning, the Nittany Lions extended the lead to 5-0 with a grand slam. A single and a walk were intermingled with a foul out and a fielder's choice. Vestal engaged in a lengthy battle with Maddock and threw an apparent strike that was called ball four. Garcia came to the plate and hit a foul ball. Bella Radican gave chase, but the ball narrowly escaped her diving attempt. Garcia, given second life, drove a pitch off the scoreboard for the grand slam.
Sarah Zimmerman entered the circle in the third inning and threw two straight scoreless innings.
The Bison scored twice in the fifth inning. Zimmerman singled up the middle for her first collegiate hit. Haley Speicher flied out. Elena Horn singled to third base. Zoie Smith hit a single to deep center field to score Zimmerman. Penn State called in its ace, Bridget Nemeth, but Brooke Popella hit a single up the middle to score Horn. A fielder's choice and a grounder ended the frame, but the Bison created excitement.
Mea Consentino entered the circle in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two doubles and a foul out to Smith started the campaign and scored one run. Barbanente stole third and a sacrifice fly drove her in. Three straight hits of a single, double, and another single tallied two more runs. A fielder's choice ended the inning, but PSU had the 9-2 advantage.
Zimmerman returned to the mound in the following inning. A flyout opened the frame, followed by two singles and a fielding error. A third single scored a run and ended the game at 10-2.
