MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (9-11) concluded the Spring Games with a narrow 4-3 loss to the Columbia Lions (4-7) on Sunday.
Bucknell briefly held a 1-0 lead before the Lions tallied four unanswered runs. The Bison fought back, scoring one run in the fifth and six innings but could not complete the rally.
Game Recap
Madison Roukey started in the circle and tossed three-straight scoreless innings to begin the game.
The Bison broke through for the opening run in the third inning. Shea Malone started the proceedings with a double to right center. Noelle Gardon laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Malone to third. Nicole Lioumis pinch hit for Elena Horn and struck out. Haley Speicher proved clutch with two outs, placing a single in left field to score Malone. Smith walked but Popella fouled out ending the inning.
Columbia counterattacked in the next inning for two runs. A fly out started the innings before two singles and a double scored the first run. A third single tallied the second run. Roukey prevented any further damage but the lead had been lost.
The Lions add two insurance runs in the fifth inning. Hunter Vestal entered the circle for Bucknell. A Shea Malone error in left field turned a single into a runner on third. The next batter walked and stole second. A wild pitch scored the first run and a chop single in the infield registered the second run. Vestal remained composed and recorded the final two outs.
Bucknell cut into the 4-1 lead in their fifth frame. Malone and Gardon singled. Horn flied out and Speicher reached on a fielder's choice which eliminated Malone. Smith celebrated her birthday with a sharp single to left field. Popella worked a bases-loaded walk. MaKenzie Hilling came up and almost did the same until a slightly high pitch was called strike three.
The Bison scored again in the sixth inning. Savannah Jones worked a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Annabella Hawkins' grounder advanced Jones to third and Malone's groundball scored the junior.
The Orange & Blue Crew placed the tying run on base in the seventh inning but could not drive her in. Speicher grounded out and Smith flied out to commence the frame. Popella singled up the middle. The final out came when Hilling's connection died in front of the catcher.
