CONWAY, S.C.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (2-2) held on in the seventh inning to defeat Campbell 4-3 and lost 10-0 in five innings to host Coastal Carolina on Saturday. Bucknell led 4-0 before yielding three runs to Campbell in the final inning. Madison Roukey entered with two outs and recorded the save. Coastal scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back in the win.
Campbell Recap
Both teams produced the same situation in the first inning. Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison and ran into early trouble. The Camels loaded the bases on three singles. The junior hurler relaxed and induced a swinging strikeout to end the frame.
Bucknell used the same method to load the bases. Elena Horn hit a single through the right side, Zoie Smith singled for her 100th career hit, and Brooke Popella batted a third single. With two outs, Annabella Hawkins came to the plate and struck out looking.
Zoie Smith smashed a solo home run in the third inning for the 1-0 Bucknell lead. The senior catcher found her stroke after being held hitless on Friday.
Savannah Jones escaped another jam in the fourth inning. Two of the first three hitters singled and a wild pitch sent the runners to second and third. Jones rallied and obtained two grounders to end the inning without yielding the lead.
The Bison padded its lead in the fifth inning. Horn walked, Smith notched her third hit of the game via a single, and Jones reached on a fielding error. Campbell changed pitchers but the move didn't faze rookie Brooke Popella who launched a double into right-center field to clear the bases. Bucknell led 4-0. Hilling walked but no further damage was done.
Campbell obtained two hits with two outs in the sixth inning. Again, Jones remained calm and received the third out with a swinging strikeout.
The Camels made everything exciting in the final inning. The frame started harmlessly enough with a grounder. Then, two singles and a walk loaded the bases. A fielder's choice at home added an out and prevented a run. Campbell issued a pinch hitter. The substitution proved useful. A single through the right side tallied two runs. Another single scored the third run. Coach Sarah Caffrey decided to reach into her bullpen. Roukey arrived in the circle and induced a fly ball for the third out and victory.
Coastal Carolina Recap
Hunter Vestal started in the circle for Bucknell. The Chanticleers' leadoff hitter smashed a home run, setting the tone for the game. A walk followed. Vestal obtained two outs before a second home run made it 3-0.
Roukey started the second inning but Coastal Carolina continued to score. This time, it was all two-out lightning. A single up the middle that Popella barely missed started the engine. The hitter stole second and another single scored her. A third single followed. Annabella Hawkins' error scored two more runs. The second runner was ruled out at home, but replay overturned the first decision. Roukey induced the final out via a grounder.
Coastal added two more runs in the third. A single and double scored the first run. A second single scored the second run. Caffrey brought Mea Consentino into the game, who obtained the third out.
The Chanticleers added two more runs. A leadoff home run started the scoring. A walk and a fielder's choice set the stage for a triple to score the 10th run. Sarah Zimmerman entered the game and obtained two straight strikeouts.
Bucknell went down in order in the fifth inning, and the run rule ended the game.
