CONWAY, S.C.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (2-3) dropped its final game of the Kickin' Chicken Classic, 3-1, to the George Washington Revolutionaries (2-2) on Sunday. Bucknell fell behind 3-0 after the first inning and could not overcome the early deficit.
Recap
Freshman pitcher Sarah Zimmerman received her first collegiate start. She lasted four batters. The leadoff hitter walked, a flyout followed, and then another walk and a double scored the first run. Coach Caffrey tabbed Madison Roukey to enter in relief. Roukey yielded a triple, which scored two more runs. The junior pitcher obtained the final two outs, but George Washington led 3-0.
Bucknell had a solid chance to counterattack in its first-inning frame. Elena Horn singled, and Zoie Smith hit her first double of the season. However, Savannah Jones and Brooke Popella struck out to end the opportunity.
Neither team advanced any threat until George Washington in the fourth inning. Two leadoff singles and a sacrifice bunt chased Roukey from the game and brought Jones to the mound. A sacrifice fly and a double scored two more runs. Jones prevented any damage, but the insurance runs were scored.
The Bison tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. MaKenzie Hilling continued her impressive opening weekend with a double. Marissa Rapino was inserted as a pinch runner. Ava Aguilar singled up the middle to score Rapino.
George Washington loaded the bases in the fifth inning with two singles and a walk. Jones escaped the threat by inducing a grounder.
A Horn single was the only Bison baserunner during their last three at-bats, as the Revolutionaries' pitching closed the door.
