RADFORD, Va.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (2-5) dropped a doubleheader 3-0 and 7-1 to the Radford Highlanders (5-2) on Friday. The Bison could not get their bats going against the potent Highlanders' pitching staff.
Game 1 Recap
Bucknell had one of its few scoring opportunities in the first inning. Elena Horn singled and stole second. Brooke Popella worked a walk, but MaKenzie Hilling's strikeout ended the inning.
Madison Roukey started in the circle for the Bison and pitched two 1-2-3 innings to commence the game.
Radford obtained its first base runner in the third inning when Popella's throwing error placed the Highlanders' Wolfe on second base. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third. With only out, this represented a significant threat to Orange & Blue's interests. Roukey proved the veteran presence and induced two outs on a strikeout and a foul out.
Zoie Smith started the fourth-inning proceedings with a double. But she was stranded there by three straight outs as Popella struck out, Hilling fouled out, and Shea Malone hit a grounder.
Radford rode the momentum to its first run. In their fourth frame, the leadoff hitter, Wilson, smacked a home run. Roukey recovered to obtain three straight outs, but Radford held the lead.
The Highlanders broke open the game in the sixth inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases. A third single tallied two runs and removed Roukey from the circle. Freshman Sarah Zimmerman entered the game and completed the inning without further additions to Radford's 3-0 lead.
Shea Malone walked in the Bison's final frame, but no other base-runners arrived, and Bucknell lost 3-0.
Game 2 Recap
Like game one, the first inning represented a significant chance for the Bison. Horn hit a leadoff single, and Smith walked. But two flyouts ended the frame without runs.
Savannah Jones started game two, and, like Roukey, she opened the contest with two scoreless innings.
The Highlanders repeated their trick of scoring once in the third inning. Jones started the frame with two quick outs until a single and a double drove in the RBI. A grounder ended the inning, but Radford had the lead.
Bucknell struck back with two-out magic in the fourth inning. Jones and Haley Speicher singled and were stationed on first and second when Noelle Gardon singled sharply to right field. Jones scored, and Speicher dashed to third. Gardon stole second, leaving Annabella Hawkins with two runners in scoring position. The senior second baseman popped up to end the inning.
Again, Radford used defensive momentum to establish offensive scoring. The Highlanders scored three runs in their fourth frame. Two singles and an error loaded the bases with one out. Radford's Wolfe worked the count to a hitter's friendly 3-1 and ripped a triple down the right field line. The bases cleared, giving Radford a 4-1 lead. Jones recovered to grab the final two outs without allowing Wolfe to score.
Zimmerman started the fifth inning but the freshman was not greeted by Southern hospitality. A walk, single, and double combo scored Radford's first run. An infield single scored the sixth run. A double steal maneuver resulted in the theft of home plate and the 7-1 lead.
Mea Consentino pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Bucknell went down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning to end the game.
