
Volleyball Falls in Five Set Heartbreaker for Regular Season Crown to Colgate

LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell (21-4, 13-3 Patriot) was two points away from a sweep of the defending champion Colgate Raiders (17-10, 14 Patriot) and were ready to celebrate the first regular-season title since 2000 before Colgate came back to win the third set and then pulled out wins in the fourth and fifth stanzas. Colgate clinched the regular season title and home-court advantage as the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Bucknell will serve as the No. 2 seed and will have a bye through to the semifinals, its highest seed since being No. 2 in 2003.
The sets were incredibly close with Bucknell winning the first two 25-21 and 25-23. Colgate won the final three 25-23, 25-18, and 17-15. It was high stakes and skilled volleyball.
Cameron Lloyd had a Herculean performance with 20 kills and 21 digs. Bri Frazilus was second with 15 kills. Caleigh O'Connell provided 49 assists. Jordan Hardy celebrated Senior Day with 29 digs.
Bucknell sat at 23-22 in the third set and needed two more points to win the match. Colgate, displaying champion composure, collected three straight points to win the set and flipped the momentum. The Bison had earlier leads of 8-1,12-4. and 19-12 but the Raiders steadily eroded the deficit. Colgate ended the set on a 6-1 run and quieted a crowded Davis Gym.
The Bison won the first two sets with key runs and crucial points. The first set started 3-0 Colgate but the Bison remained calm and forged ahead 10-9. A 10-2 Bucknell run followed, but Colgate, establishing a theme, fought back with a 6-0 stretch. However, the deficit was too great, and a 3-0 Bucknell run finished the set.
Colgate started strong in the second set leading 12-7. It was Bucknell's turn to rally, drawing even at 15-15. The Raiders reestablished their lead at 20-17 but the Bison kept coming. An 8-3 Orange & Blue run sent the home team up 2-0.
Bucknell held a 17-14 lead in the fourth set and the outlook for a four-set win looked promising. The Raiders used an 11-1 run helped by two of the Raiders's 23 blocks and two straight aces to force a fifth set. Colgate's advantage above the net was evident with 23 blocks to Bucknell's 13.
The fifth set issued all the drama. Colgate led 6-3 before a 7-1 Bucknell run placed the Bison in the driver's seat for the magic number of 15. With the score at 12-9, star setter Caleigh O'Connell fell prey to injury forcing her temporary removal. Bucknell stayed hardy and got to match point at 14-11, but four straight points brought Colgate to a match point of its own. O'Connell heroically returned and tied the game with a kill, but the Raiders struck twice to win the set and match and celebrated their regular season crown and tournament hosting duties.
Bucknell celebrated Senior Day by honoring Jordan Hardy and Jen Sivak.
