LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell picked up its 18th win of the season and 13th by sweep when the Bison (18-2, 10-1 Patriot) sank the Navy Midshipmen (4-17, 4-8 Patriot) in straight sets (27-25, 25-20, 25-19) on Friday night in Davis Gym. The Orange & Blue improved to 6-0 at home, helped by a riotously loud crowd of students and family.
Bri Frazilus's 12 kills were a game-high and part of the Bison's all-round effort as five players notched five kills or more. Sidney Shaffer was efficient achieving nine kills on a .421 hitting percentage. Tijana Kostic provided seven kills. Cameron Lloyd delivered six kills and Riley Tucker supplied five. Caleigh O'Connell masterfully handed out 34 assists. Jordan Hardy grabbed 17 digs to lead the defensive standard.
The Bison's win was crucial as both American and Colgate each won to remain a half game back. Bucknell sits at 10-1 in league play while American and Colgate are 10-2. The Orange & Blue have defeated American and lost to Colgate in 2024 and will play American tomorrow and finishes the regular season at home versus Colgate.
The first set featured a massive battle as Navy cruised to a 10-6 advantage. Bucknell continued to trail before pulling off a crucial run to go up 18-15. Navy remained undaunted and used a 5-0 run to regain the lead. The Bison fought back to tie the game and twice (24-23, 25-24) was playing for the set point only for the Mids to prolong the fight. A Navy attack error ended the set, 27-25.
Bucknell raced to a 6-1 lead in the second set. Navy again tenaciously cut into the deficit 7-6 and tied the game at 9-9. The Bison reclaimed the lead and never trailed or tied again though the Midshipmen did inch within 15-14. A Bucknell 7-0 run fueled by two Lloyd kills and Navy attack errors effectively put the set to rest. Navy had a 3-0 mini-run but it only delayed the inevitable as a Frazilus kill ended the set 25-20.
The final set began as a seesaw battle with several ties. Bucknell began to breakaway stretching its lead to 14-9. The Midshipmen cut the score to 18-16 but would inch no closer. Two straight kills placed the Bison at 24-17 and seeking the match point. Navy prevented elimination with two points but a Navy service error provided an anti-climatic but satisfactory result to the competition.
Bucknell hosts American tomorrow at 4 p.m. in a critical conference contest. A victory places the Bison two games ahead of the Eagles and hands Bucknell a 2-0 advantage in the head-to-head tiebreaker category.
