LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals over the final 7:19 of game time to pull within two of tying Boston University (4-1, 2-0 PL), but the Terriers held on for a 14-12 win at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium at the Pascucci Family Athletics Complex on Saturday.
Dutch Furlong led Bucknell (1-5, 0-1 PL) with 10 points, falling two shy of the school record, and registered eight assist, which was one shy of the school record. Connor Davis scored a team-high five goals and added one assist, and Will Hopkins joined him with a hat trick. Danny Striano supplied seven ground balls, and Joe Scattareggia tallied three caused turnovers.
Davis and Furlong connected on four of Bucknell's 12 goals, and Furlong also assisted on all three of Hopkins' scores.
Boston's Louis Perfetto led the Terriers with eight points on a goal and seven assists, while Timmy Ley posted five goals and an assist.
The Terriers benefited from 21 Bison turnovers. 28 of Boston's 47 shots were on goal, while Bucknell put 19 of its 38 shots on target. Faceoffs were fairly even, with the Terriers winning 14 of 27.
The late three-goal run was the third of its kind for the Bison, who came back from several sizable deficits. After falling behind 5-1 in the first quarter, Bucknell used another run to pull within one of tying at 6-5 with 7:53 to play in the first half, but the Terriers carried a 9-6 advantage into the break.
Hopkins scored with just a second left in the second quarter, and the Bison opened the third with back-to-back goals by Davis and Cam Doolan to make it a 12-9 game. Though the Bison outscored the Terriers 5-2 in the final period, it wasn't enough to overcome Boston's largest lead of 12-6 with 33 seconds left in the third.
Trailing 14-11 late in the fourth, Bucknell scored two goals within 16 seconds of each other to keep the comeback attempt alive with 1:13 to play, but a shot by Hopkins was blocked and another by Doolan hit the post. Four of Bucknell's shots throughout the game hit the goalpost.
Jack Feda also finished the game with a goal, and Ethan Gyllenhaal added an assist.
Jaz Zanelli played all 60 minutes in goal and made 14 saves. Boston' Matt Garber finished with seven saves.
Bucknell is back home next weekend to host Loyola (Md.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 18.
